- very neat slow ballet of geometric minimalism, married with care to the serene audio
i find some of the scenes to look quite goofy with the strong SSAO and it's halos though, especially the couple first ones. aliasing is also a bit of an issue there - rulezadded on the 2019-08-26 17:11:32

- i agree with dipswitch about the shortcomings in the art direction but it's nevertheless coherent enough to not take too much away from the enjoyment

- 4k Windows Eisenerz by LJ & Virgill [web]
- Really impressive distance field, and artifact galore. The latter for better and worse, reminiscent of the Calodox *ikum intros that I so love, but doesn't come as close to wrapping me into something as ominous as those worlds. Similarly, funnily enough, the music due to the crude (though still impressive) physical modeling creates a similar aura, albeit the harmony is more grounded to our own realm.
Like a lot of LJ's intros, this cropping only goes so far for me. It's the same basic method employed in most notably Maintenance, Faraday Future and Korolev, which I'd describe as "the calm before the storm". The problem—as I see it anyway—is trying to realize a too elaborate concept in the category. I wouldn't even say it cannot be done, but I feel like at least all of the aforementioned intros along with Eisenerz suffer fatally from ending on a disappointing cliffhanger. There's a dissonance created by the huge buildup that essentially constitutes the entire intro itself, and ending it all on a dramatic final shot of a central visual piece (a MacGuffin, essentially) that is never resolved, but instead just faded away. I think the intention is to build mystery, but the formula has become predictable and doesn't work on me anymore.
I have a feeling this might be due your approach to making 4k intros. As I understand your approach still is to first create the intro "proper", and then cut things away from it until you reach the intended size? I always avoided this method, instead preferring to start from a clean slate and building things on top of what I have already, carefully keeping an eye on the current output size. Both approaches are valid, but I think they also inherently lead to different kinds of intros being made, and I think the syndrome of that manifests as non-thought out endings is very apparent in the "remove all excess afterwards" approach. I think the results in Maintenance and Faraday Future succeeded much better, perhaps Unmaintained did as well.
This is a beautiful marvel of a narrow technical niche, with serious flaws manifesting as both visual artifacts and in the narrative arch. My enjoyment with this formula only goes so far. - isokadded on the 2019-08-25 15:05:32

- First and foremost, very cool audio, big up, keen! Sounds like Tri Repetae -era Autechre with modern sound design tinge. Visually I'm bothered by some of the shortcomings though, such as the aliasing in the light patterns (due to low res framebuffer I presume) and the cheap roughness map pattern on the floor.
Love the intention though =) - isokadded on the 2019-08-25 14:20:51
