- @gloom @frog: Yes, the last part is probably a bit too long. I blame it on a looming deadline. The process of tuning the track so it fiits the music is a bit time consuming. As for scrollers, it was actually left out after we were unable to make it fit with the flow of the demo. Response did make a bit longer tune on my request, but it didn't work well at all.

It's the first demo on this particular machine, which means the creators probably spent most of their time actually trying to get something that works at all, so yes it's probably not going to be 100% original "in your face" never seen before effects.
I've been tinkering with the Tiki on and off for over 4 years, but sometimes months of not doing anything. All the tools needed were made from scratch, except for the compiler/assembler (I'm using SDCC). I wrote a linker with some nifty features, serial transfer program to easily test code and write disk images and an almost cycle-exact emulator (I used publicly available Z80 and AY emulator code though).
The demo uses a custom trackloader which is capable of loading from the disk while playing music. Considering that you have to poll the disk controller constantly and a new byte appears about every 130th cycle, this was not easy.
It has been very fun doing something like this completely from scratch and I am considering doing a complete writeup some day. I've also started writing ideas for the next demo. :) - isokadded on the 2016-07-17 15:34:33
