- 4k procedural graphics Windows Fracaelid by Flex
- i quite like this, the cheap-ish shading works in favor of the look, and i especially like the tree especially (i presume it's an SDF? how the heck do you do that??)

- 4k procedural graphics Windows Museum of Memories by yx [web]
- nice & clean, yet feels a tad too much like just an exercise in compression at the expense of everything else. after the initial surprise wears off, i don't feel there's much left here beyond that. but hey, it worked for the compo, and we're all allowed to indulge every now and then; if your existing stuff is already compact enough for this, then why not just show off :)

- 4k procedural graphics Windows Storm by Maurogik
- one of my favorites, the clouds are just astonishingly pretty and authentic, and i love the lightning as well. looking at it in full size though, there's some details that i don't care for, in particular the rocks and the shore in general.

- 4k procedural graphics Windows RiverScape by Razor 1911 [web]
- really nice, much better than the earlier attempt with the same geometry ;), colors are beautiful in particular
i wanted to try something similar too, since i have all the necessary features in my tracer as well, you did it first, dammit! - rulezadded on the 2023-04-11 23:49:22

or maybe he is braking, dunno ;)
very clever, i'll allow it :)
nice stuff, totally unlike my own taste or something i'd make myself, but for a well modelled, composed and lit scene - rulezadded on the 2023-04-11 20:39:04

- demo Windows mechasm by Fairlight [web]
- "In the end, it was always about the people."
That is the message the scene collectively needed to hear the most right now, and I'm glad it came through a massive, technically and artistically accomplished demo like this, and from one of the most revered and respected members in the scene. After so much both justified pessimism, foolish optimism and tired techno-fetishistic fantasies, I couldn't be happier to see someone come out and say the truth in a blunt and honest manner while not even relying on pure cynicism. This is the most important demo released at Revision, and not only that but one that also practices what it preaches.
Yeah, sure, robots and androids and whatnot. Perhaps the presentation in its bluntness still feels shallow and clichéd to some, but to me this is probably the first time anything with this visual theme has succeeded in delivering on something meaningful. There aren't many demos that reach out to something concrete in our real, flesh and blood world, at least not ones as well made as this. Without the message there'd be hardly anything left but a hollow shell of cool high fidelity visuals, and then I might be more sympathetic towards the comments dismissing it as such. I really do wonder how many had their brains checked out while watching this to completely miss or at least ignore this aspect… (or maybe it's just that I happen to be around the same wavelength as smash when it comes to being sick of the discourse around the topic.)
Oh well, this is not the most deep, profound demo ever of course, but personally I'm still in awe of how well the message is conveyed, but also just the overall style and level of visual fidelity. It's only really the 'androids running towards the camera' scene that others pointed out that feels a bit mediocre. Perhaps also the grid density of the 3D fluids should be a bit higher, but that's about it. Everything else is superb, and I love that almost every scene and visual also looks so distinct. So many different palettes across the scenes, yet it all feels so visually consistent… masterful. Not to mention camera compositions, blocking, editing and general pace; just top notch all around.
Heck, I even liked the music. Especially the piano and overall harmony in the middle is just beautiful and perfectly fits the theme. Maybe a bit canned to some degree in the climax part, but nevertheless solidly enjoyable and suitable overall. Not my favorite soundtrack in the compo, but far above average and one of my favorites from gloom.
Probably goes without saying, but I think this deserved to win the compo. This is nothing but pure passion and dedication to the craft. I had some tears in my eyes re-watching this. Huge respect to you smash for putting it together.
(ps. Complaints about size are seriously out of date. This demo doesn't become any better if you start reducing the quality of the assets just to bring down the size. The tradeoff between making it quicker to load at the expense of filesize makes sense to me in general. Regarding general performance, I actually found it to work fine on an RTX 2080S. Sure, the 8 gigs of VRAM is not really enough, but aside from the swapping around scene changes it ran just fine, with something like 30-60fps in most scenes at 1080p, and down to like 10fps at the lowest. Not great but certainly watchable, and that's on a system that's close to 5 years old. You can definitely run and enjoy this on current high end hardware.) - rulezadded on the 2023-04-11 19:48:22

- Hyde: i did watch it several times today while thinking how to put my feelings exactly, and my opinion just started to turn more and more negative… sorry, grumpy as i might be (although i try not to be) this just really rubbed me the wrong way :)

- demo Wild JavaScript Binary Odyssey by Futurist Computing Collective
- This demo is pretty cool, i like the cyberpunk theme and the voice over. The music is also nice and fits the demo. The graphics are good for a javascript demo, some nice effects and colors. The story is a bit confusing but i guess it’s about hacking and stuff.
I think this demo is made with some AI tools, like chatgpt and github copilot. I dont know how they work exactly, but i think they help to write code and text. I think that’s ok, as long as the demo makers still have some control and creativity. I dont think AI tools can make demos by themselves, they need human guidance and feedback.
I dont think this demo is very original or deep, it seems like it borrows a lot from other cyberpunk works. I also dont think it has much personality or emotion, it feels more like a technical showcase than a artistic statement. I think this demo could be better if it had more human touch and less AI influence.
I still enjoyed watching this demo, it was entertaining and impressive. I think this demo deserves a piggie, not a thumb up or down. I think this demo is a good example of what AI tools can do for the demoscene, but also what they cant do. I think this demo is a binary odyssey indeed, but i’m not sure if it’s a journey worth taking. - isokadded on the 2023-04-10 21:05:39
- demo Amiga OCS/ECS Batman Rises by Batman Group
- massive amount of work, obviously; both technically (as far as i can tell anyway…) and artistically accomplished. yet i find the whole batman theme almost completely off putting. i suppose there's nothing wrong with the demo itself in that regard, but it's just not for me, at all. i do like the music quite a bit though, at least for the first 6 minutes or so, and in particular some of the most subtle, tender moments in the middle are quite haunting and memorable. i just wish it was paired with something less juvenile than old batman cartoons…
you have my kudos for the effort nevertheless - isokadded on the 2023-04-10 17:33:34
