I work at EA Phenomic, we've got a 38,5h week on paper, in reality noone controls nor cares when you come and leave, it's pure trust-based work time. As long as you get your stuff done it's allright. I see people coming to work at 10:30, and others leaving at 16:30. I guess I'm "lucky" as well :)

xt1rm, i'd consider any employer (in our field) that's less liberal than that to simply be a bad employer to get away from. what you're describing is, to me, a minimal work condition.

Unity4 has preliminary Linux support, but it hadn't been released when we started the project.

Not to target you specifically, but what is it with Linux users that feel the need to come to non-Linux threads and say something like this out loud? Every single fucking time? It's like the guy who never lets anyone forget that he doesn't watch TV, or the music geek who inserts into any discussion that he liked the now-popular band before they were cool? Who the fuck cares? Are you proud of your operating system because XYZ doesn't support it and it doesn't support ABC?

I find that if you are drinking lots of caffeine to avoid good sleep and you are stressed and trying to juggle it all you end up being sloppy on your job.

I don't work in the IT industry, though I did briefly a few years ago and found the low-level jobs to be quite boring. The people I have talked to that have worked in the gaming industry making the big bucks end up pulling like 15+ hour days, 7 days a week, for a few months straight to meet the strict deadlines to get a game to ship on time. I couldn't handle this unhealthy lifestyle, but maybe someone else here can.

Anyways, I work in the Autobody/Collision Repair industry painting cars, 8-5 every day and you still feel exhausted after sitting around kicking up dust from DA sanders and hand sanding tiny crevices, etc. I find it best to just simply try and get 7-8 hours of sleep in every night. Even if you are still awake, just lay down in your bed. If you're like me and like to keep hitting snooze set your alarm earlier so you can hit the snooze a few more times and when you wake up finally it's like your original time. What I mean is say you want to get up at 7:00AM, but you hit the snooze like 3 times and end up waking up around 7:25AM and you have to leave at 7:30AM. Set that alarm for 6:30AM instead you end up waking at 7:00AM after you hit the snooze 3 times. Works great for me and I get to work feeling great with no need for coffee or soda.

The day I realized that I only have a limited amount of coding karma, I changed my working mode and made sure I spent all day writng concepts and attending lengthy aligment and status meetings. This way I stilly enjoy coding for my Atari until late at night.

There was a period when I also coded quite a bit at work, that really hampered my productivity for the important things.

For me, it doesn't matter whether I write code at work or do something else, in fact some of the code I write at work might inspire me for some democoding later. It's the all day 9-5 work that kills it, going back at home and only want to relax. In the morning or midday I think of code I want to try when I go back at home but then the mood fades away.

But then there are also different mood periods, recently I don't want to spent time on playing games. I think about playing games and then I don't want to feel unproductive. Not sure if it leads to always democoding, but it makes me want to do something more productive, even if it's just watching youtube science channels.

I mean, very soon (hopefully after assembly) I will get into "gaming mode" mood. And then after getting bored into "wanna code again" mood. I just let it come.

Excellent thread revival! My strategy is to eat schnitzel every meal.

I stay sharp by partying hard in the weekend. Also maiking, creating cool things is a huge motivation. As well as working in a job that connects to who you really are.
