Capped.tv getting pounded again
category: offtopic [glöplog]
http://capped.tv/monthtop - Crush is on the top again, after being hotlinked to the Japanese version of gizmodo. 38k views in the last 48 hours using a cool 1.5 TB :)

I'm so glad I switched to a CDN service, now I can actually keep up with this usage. Though, the CDN account I use was donated [by someone in the cdn company], I'm unsure how they'll react to such high and sudden usage.
--
Back when the demo was released, it was fairly quickly linked on a high-traffic Japanese board along with a few 4ks and other releases from breakpoint, mostly embedding youtube links.
But Crush wasn't on youtube, so someone decided to post that using a capped embed link. My server kept up with the insane demand that generated, much to my displeasure, facing quite a hefty bandwidth overage bill in the mere 8 hours it was on before I temporarily took the video down.

Always fun when your little project gets much more attention than you thought it ever would.

Also thought I'd add: In this new case, everything is fine. Server keeps up, and the CDN company donating resources is absolutely fine with it.
funny that such happens! now i need to check out this floppy demo again :P
floppy and not to forget anadune! lol
The server company should be prepared for spikes like this :) So long as they're not getting big spikes on a bunch of sites at once, anyway.
And btw, this post is probably going to make it worse, as a ton of people here wonder what the demo is and rewatch it ;)

The only thing that was nice about that prod was the 2d fluid effects. Why did it suddenly get gizmodo'ed?
Crush has a wrong video link...it links to sult by loonies
maybe the model with the breasts did it for them...
Navis: you mean those "pregnant" models :)
Wow. That new fancy capped tv with the video previews rulez big time! Nice work Micksam7. It is so cool you should consider to bounce yourself to Micksam8!
The CDN network seems to be in beta so they might even really like the bandwidth spike. Because without it they might have problem to see that they can handle it. Manually generating true (1000's of originators) 1.5Tb in traffic isn't that easy for testing.

Indeed. 38k in 2 days is not that much as visitors. When something appears in a big site like Gizmodo, it usually spreads to other big sites across the world, sometimes even bigger.
It might get even a hundred or two hundred thousand visits in half a day. Not much more in any case because of the so tech/geek nature of demos and its reduced public.
1.5TB in 48 hours is about 75 megabit/sec. If a CDN couldn't handle that, I don't think I'd ever want to buy service from them :-)
They can handle it fine, I'm just concerned they'd yell at me since they were expecting light usage for a niche video site. :) The mail I got back from them today totally quelled that fear though.
Honestly, Capped + that CDN should be able to survive a thousand or so views a second. I'm unsure if I should encourage that, though. :)
Anyway, Crush has gotten 126,000 total views on capped, while Elevated is listed as having nearly 600,000 views on youtube. The crush video seems to be spreading on mostly Japanese tech sites, boards, and blogs according to my linkbacks, just it's first link through and this gizmodo.jp link were the biggest spikes. And pretty much all the pages have Elevated listed as well, which seems to be much more popular than Crush.

Zplex: next winnerdemo? :P
It's easy to keep up with a bandwidth tsunami when you have a donated CDN account. The best that us poor schlubs can get without breaking the bank is 10mbps unmetered.
i can get 90Mbit/s fiber at home at 70eur/month - however, I doubt that would be nearly sufficient for video streaming to 200k users over 24hrs.
