has spengler or sokoban ever made a demo?

category: general [glöplog]
the easiest way for all of us to avoid thumb-downs is to make better demos...

and, honestly, 50% of the demos hitting pouet actually do suck.
what still gets me doing the scene-thing is the other half, which is cool.

far from trying to set a rule here, but I really do think people should have been at least involved in demo creation to vote here... yeah, you don't need to make movies to watch movies, that granted, but you need to have been involved in the cinema-world (like, know how things are done, know actors and how they _should_ act) to be a good movie critic.

Someone who hasn't been involved on the making of a demo can't really appreciate the amount of work going into one... sure, you can just vote the final result and how it impacts on you, but most of us do vote code, graphics and music independently. Graphics and music are a matter of taste, as usually in a demo, you don't vote the technical quality of it, but how both music and graphics fit the demo (on how many thumbs up can you read 'music is not my taste, but it fits'). Code is a much different story, people who don't know how to code demo effects don't know the amount of work involved on a technically jawdropping demo (same goes for intros, for example, at fr-08, non-coders usually thought it was perfect, coders thought the compression was good, and there was a lot of content, although it was just another 3d-flyby).

So I think yes, the oppinion of people actually involved on demo, at least to me, counts more than the one of those who have never done any... as I said, not that those shouldn't be allowed to vote, but it's something that at least I, do take into account.

enuff ranting'

This gets into the whole topic of what people look for in a demo.
There are quite a few things people take into account when rating demos:
a.) code/ technical skill
b.) graphics/visuals
c.) music
d.) design
e.) whether it runs on their machine
f.) what platform/hardware
g.) who made it
h.) year it was made

Recently I realized that I like demos mostly based on their music (for instance, I liked Rise!/Mindforce&Park). Other people obviously look for different things. And that creates differences of opinion.

i don't take into account votes from people who disagree with me either :-D

(just kidding, of course)

I don't like Jcl's comments because it has bad BB Code, poorly formatted text, and I don't agree with the content. Thumbs down.
I think that 'being involved in creating a demo' is rather vague... I mean, for example, Visualice may have been involved in tons of demos, but I am still quite sure that there are other people have a better understanding of the quality of democode, without having so much 'experience'.
Or an even better example: Lator has made tons of intros, but I think there are other people, with less 'experience' with a better understanding of demo design than him ;)
There are just many areas of expertise, as Crusader already mentioned.

I don't think you necessarily have to have made a demo to understand and appreciate the effort and the skill that has gone into making one.
I think it's more a case of others having to know your level of effort and skill in order to accept your opinions.

Personally I think everyone is free to post their opinions on demos, as long as it stays above a certain level ofcourse.
What the creators of the production in question do with it, that is their business.
If a demo is really good, virtually everyone will appreciate it anyway, there are plenty of examples right here on pouet.

guys, I never said anything about how these individuals vote, I only asked if they'd ever worked on a demo. If they have, I'd like to look at what they've done. The question remains: have they done anything for me to look at?

Body language.
all this "flame"-stuff here at pouet is like a virus from all those gamer-lamers we hate!
we exclude gamers from our loved parties but some in the szene behave like gamers.

Stop "flaming" pouet! Pouet was and is a great archive with the participation of users. Those who just "flame", those who behave like 3-year-old-gamers destroy pouet.

Instead those should clearly state, what they liked and didn't like in a demo. Pouet should be a place of constructive critics!

well... flame me, hate me.
I do not care!

I've been saying this all the time and no one listens. They just keep ripping into me and blaming me for stuff.

But that don't matter what they think cos they couldn't charm a peanut out of a paper bag.

They all act so tough but they wouldn't be so tough if a real life zulu came upto them and asked them if they want a knock.

I've been patient I've been good. Tried to keep my hands on the table. It's been hard just holding back, you know what I mean...

It's very windy over here. Perhaps I shouldn't of had beans for breakfast.
just remove all comments from users who have an average rating below 0.0 during a long period of time (that means they don't like what the scene is producing, we don't need them)

serious raters are between 0.2 to 0.5.

spengler, thank you, you can leave now.
