linux / wine demo compatibility?
category: general [glöplog]
hey,
i got a nice new PC with I7 920, 12GB RAM and a so-so GTS 250 nVidia. I plan to install OpenSUSE Linux to finally kick windows. however, being a big fan of the PC Demoscene, I would really miss to run/execute the demos. because realtime is what it's all about playing just the vids, is not the solution. What are your experience with using Wine or VirtualBox under linux? are linux demo-ports more often used these days?
grtx,
\twh

wine runs opengl demos well afaik, for dx i don't know.
VirtualBox only run OpenGL demos with hardware acceleration.
linuxdemos.org is back?
ugh, just keep a windows partition or you'll regret it later...
I did, and it committed seppuku
Well, you are going to be surprised how many programs wine runs correctly. I use it all the time for certain games etc. I will also generaly try to run a demo with wine before resorting to booting windows.
Unfortunately alot of demos are coded in a hurry, use APIs in "creative" ways etc. and that means alot of demos will simply not run correctly under wine.
So, yeah, if you need to watch all demos, you'll need a small windows partition. Dual-booting sucks bigtime, but as long as you focus your work on a single OS (the one you prefer) and use the other only when absolutely you'll be fine.

Actually, if you need to watch all demos, you need real hardware for each conceivable demo platform.
and a big depot to store them in.
