Best what? For me, best song is (mostly) Clean, while best production is (mostly) In Your Room (the album version, not the single mixes). My fav record is Violator by far.

But, really, best DM song of all times is Vertigen (oh, wait, this is Recoil, or is it the actual DM?)...

Too bad they became a big joke. They should stop making music right after Ultra.

Martin Gore's minimal, acoustic guitar + vocal rendition of Personal Jesus from "B-sides and Remixes" is jolly good.

Too many good songs...

* Precious
* It's No Good
* Strangelove
* Walking In My Shoes

I guess I've heard 'Personal Jesus' and 'Enjoy The Silence' too many times so they've worn out and became boring...

I actually think Sisters of Mercy were way better than DM:

So what exactly do they have in common in any way? I agree with you, though.

Well ... DM had a huge influence even for us youths growing up "behind the curtain". It defined my perception of what essentially is electronic dance music.
Remarkably I'm remembering "Everything Counts" (especially because of the introduction) and "Clean."

Do you remember those Amiga MODs influenced by DM songs? :) I've heard some songs on the Amiga first and later then realized they're actually by DM. I didn't like DM too much in the 89/90, it was a big fashion those times, I only shaved my hair like Gahan had ;) Errrm, because I preferred more melodic songs like those from the Clarke's times, so I preffered Erasure and such pop stuff, but after about 10 years I returned to all those DM songs and started to listen them carefully and considered that this music is a real quality. The music mood changes with the age, but there is some music which is listenable for the whole life and this is the case of DM I think.
Do you remember those Amiga MODs influenced by DM songs?

There must be a cold million of them out there ;D

Never let me down again. (let me add: not really the "best" but my fave nonetheless)
So what exactly do they have in common in any way? I agree with you, though.

They both were New-wave or whatever people used to call them.. Dark-Wave, Post-punk. It actually doesn't matter but they had their creative peak in late 80's /early 90's with DM's Violator and SOM's Floodland or Vision Thing. A big difference to me is Sisters of Mercy knew when is time to stop making music. DM should stop right after Ultra, anything released after 1997 was a joke. If not for their name no major record label would ever release Exciter, Playing the Angel, SOTU or Delta Machine. But then again, DM could put whole bunch of nonsense on the album and hardcore fans will buy it and say it's the greatest thing they ever heard.

To me, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk always had something potent to say with synths and cared how it sounded. They're totally different yet have released some remarkable albums that set them apart from other very capable synth groups.

DM continued developing their great concept, with more hits coming, but I must say when I want to hear some DM, I go to those early inventive, fun, remarkable albums full of great songs.

Black Celebration was so godDAMN fresh for its time, for example. I select the whole damn album as their best song. I mean, Here is the house... just so good.

(Whispers: and Photographic and Love in itself if you stop it before the end improv ;))

How about DM most cheesy song. I'm in between "Boys Say Go" and "Tora! Tora! Tora!"
