An intro for a homebrew computer

category: general [glöplog]
Today I found the homepage of Phil Ruston, who wrote those great "Giddy" games back in the day.

He made his own computer out of a Z80 and a bunch of PIC microcontrollers:
http://www.retroleum.co.uk/electronics.html

Which is cool. He also wrote an intro for it:
http://www.retroleum.co.uk/z80-demo.html

Why am I telling you this? Because I thought it was really cool and you might, too!

That is very cool indeed. Some time ago a bunch of us discussed on IRC that someone should develop a spec for a sufficiently simple "demo computer" which could be built from easily accessible components.. and then arrange a demo compo for it. But this "radical" idea has probably occurred to a 1000 other sceners too. And not being a hardware/electronics expert myself, I have no idea how realistic such endeavor would be..

Not mentioning the idea of DemoOS when Windows 95 came out.

Hey cool... he's added hardware sprites:
http://www.retroleum.co.uk/z80-demo.html

and a better sound card:
http://www.retroleum.co.uk/z80-SX28-soundcard.html

and made a filesystem for his files:

xeron, thanks for parsing the webpage for us. none of us would have been able to extract this valuable information without your help!!
No problem. Its a service I provide at no extra cost.

I posted an update in case people were interested but hadn't looked for updates themselves yet.

Writing demos on obscure hardware is cool, and since I'm guessing that the install-base of this hardware is roughly equivavlent to 1, this is per definition pretty cool!

While you were at it, xeron, why couldn't you put the link in a url tag, so we could click it? I mean when you bothered to copy and paste the links for us.
The project is really cool, I wisg I could do something like that at some point (And I'm sure I'm will too)

What a geek :) - it's rather cool though. I guess that makes me a geek too, doesn't it.

I enjoy playing his game Giddy3 :)
