Nexus '95 - I can't forget ;-)

category: general [glöplog]

Nexus '95 was the worst party ever held on german ground and some of the visitors (survivors?) are still active in the scene. For these people (but not only) I wrote finally a party report. You will find it here. I hope for some nice discussion or just remembering :-)

yes! nexus 95 was a trauma. In fact this was the first scene-party I was on and I released a 40k for "Shoot" which did crash during the competition. Then officially Azure/Artwork won. Later in the results file one could read that Shoot was #1 even though it did crash on their machine. Really weird.
Luckily the next year I went to Symposium (without Mekka at that time) and everything got better. :)

At Nexus Party I wanted to show friends of mine how cool the scene is. Oh hell, this of course became a real misery! To all our luck this party was never organized again. ;-)

Yeah, was ok, a little small IIRC. Also, I managed to get a pic with infamous Günter Frhr. v. Gravenreuth! :)

Hang on... I was under the impression that von Gravenreuth was a sort of arch-nemesis of the cracking scene, so I assumed that in this case he'd strong-armed his way into the event and got roundly mocked for it (as per Losso's photo and the winning graphics entry). But now I'm reading in that second report that he was actually invited, as a special guest. And sure enough, according to his Wikipedia article (Google translation):

Quote:
Gravenreuth's invitations to cracker group parties led to a kind of love-hate relationship between the software pirates and the lawyer.

Is there some back story that I'm missing, or did they seriously invite the guy who was actively trying to bust the entire scene, just for the lulz?

Yes, this ranged back to the late 1980s. Gravenreuth was f. ex. on this TV discussion on German WDR in 1988 and subsequently invited to parties like Radwar in 1990. I have seen Gravenreuth on several parties between then and about 2000 IIRC.

FGvG seemed to have enjoyed his celebrity status for a while and was present at several venues. I found it funny too. I think at worst he had to expect to be called an asshat or get some stickers posted on his suit.

Gotta say though, even with reading the German party reports I fail to see what exactly was traumatizing about it :)

scene drama seemed to be big (probably even bigger) in the days as well

HA! I was thinking that Herr G. was permanently disliked by, let's call them, the computer freax. And today I have learnt the opposite (well, almost the opposite)...

Trauma is obviously just word-play. The party started late with people standing outside with their hardware. We had to pay additional entrance fee for a techno-party in the same venue. The party-place was tiny, crowded and loud. Everyone got kicked out in the middle of the night - all of this was unexpected (as stated in the reports). And to make matters worse, GvG was there! Which was actually one of the few cool things about Nexus, albeit in a weird way. Compared to current parties, Nexus was utter crap.
