I saw the pouet bbs asking for demos for the festival

I wasn't aware that pouet.net had an AI. Amazing!

Also, one has to personally submit demos to these festivals to venture a reasonable clear set of motives to submit work to these things? Wow, I didn't know that, thanks for clearing that one up. Clearly the hypocritical elements of the statement above didn't shine out enough for you?

Navis, aMusic: nothing against you, your crew or your (very good) work again but don't tell me that releasing your big demo at The Gathering instead of Breakpoint this year was pure coincidence and that money matters never popped into your minds.

Because I REALLY don't buy this one :)

I submitted to the festival without any idea that there was money involved. So yes, it is quite possible.

MONEY IS KILLING THE DEMOSCENE!
I second Dipswitch: it's not fair to write down something in a brochure spread at a party / festival where a competition is held and a comment is done over only production and if it's negative it's really bad to read that because it's not any more an objective voting poll.

However this festival is held by organisers and they have almost any rights because its THEIR festival, this is like a private club : they can put you outside or not let you going inside if this suit their taste.

aMUSIC your reaction is good: don't go anymore to this festival nor submit anything there till they explain or make apologize and change their behaviour to your work. I understand your point, because it's not fair but nothing is fair in a world which don't have the same fairness as you have!!! Nothing is fair: we don't make the law.

So now only produce music for me, and those who love your tunes because yours is great and we enjoy your artwork and hard work.

Please put a link here to your music (host it at scene.rg so we can get a download counter) as a mp3 or .ogg so everybody will be able to listen to this great tune. And those who don't love it, stop listen to it, nor download it.

rez: those who hate mac didn't get one nor have used one. There is always racism from jaleous people who don't know other things. But we (that is you and me) have tried lots of computers and honestly I love all of them but yes I've also suffered from all because bugs appears.

If I organize an exhibition on modern art and then in my exhibition catalogue introduce a painting with "lame! no tits!!! I can not even recognize anything!", this surely is my freedom of speech but still rather retarted and insulting for the painter.
I really don't get what's hypocrite about complaining about that.

keops : Neither demo was considered 'big'. It was 'artsy' and 'pop-hit'. The decision which one to take to which party is based mainly upon previous experience. I have stated before that, after the 'winnerdemo' incident, breakpoint would serve as a platform for experimentation. and FYI the 'captive' project started 2-3 months before animal attraction, and I personally love it alot more.
Maybe next year it will be the other way round :-)

I have each year a great time at Gathering (which, together with Asm, were the places to be along time ago), and I would be there as a visitor any time.

As chaos once said 'you would make more money flipping burgers than winning demoparties'.

shifter : Yeah, *being* at the partyplace with a competition entry is much more satisfying than staying home.
This is not the first 'nu-media' festival that we supplied our (released) work for - About a year ago we sent one demo to an Italian arts festival. No profit to be made, No 'fame' nothing. (there wasn't even a reply to say 'you failed to go through to the final' or something).

But we would still do it time and time again. For the same reason we submit to our national party since 95. You will find out that most people would do the same, and they are neither hypocrites - or fools.

Navis: listen to Chaos / Dierk as he is wise. And he has a good eye so he sees that's it's far more interesting, moneywise, to sell 2 minutes making burgers to 300 ppl per day for 3 days at 3€ each (that's 300*3*3 = 2700€; and 7 hours of work per day) than taking 3 months to half a year at 3 hours per day of huge brainstorming and balls kicking coding C++ stuff which will give you a 1500€ prize.
Yes MC DO + Burger King and such are richer than M$ himself.

Conclusion: start cooking and make good recipes for us all (well if you wanna get rich because if what makes you happy is launching compilation and creating virtual worlds then making demos is better). Whatever demoscene isn't about money, it's about becoming a legend and beeing the most biggest geek on earth (because if you don't sell burgers, it's because you love beeing alone with your computer, coding strange things only other coders can understand like mov ax,dx or printf(&whatthis-ptr); and you love high level maths).

Yes no the world isn't about money it's about beeing happy and if you work hard and are quick to react and find custommers you become rich. Demos are great there because they are visually attractive like ads. That's the great things about them: they are addictive.

Saying to somebody his music isn't your cup of tea isn't hypocrit but saying it publicly in a demo / film compo to the voters isn't objective especially if you're the organisers of the party (we can hence think that the orgas do their best to push down certain entries so they don't win the prize whereas their own entries can more easily win). However I don't know this festival and I don't say this was the case. Whatever something goes wrong on this festival and like me they have to make some kind of real apologizes. They have to say "pardon, sorry" to both the ASD team and the musician and the audience of this festival. Or perhaps this is done so ASD will not compete there and this way they get rid of the most hard to beat competitors.

In the later case and whatever, aMUSIC you've done the good step talking about this there so now we know.

ep, to the best of my knowledge, the nominees and winners were selected by a jury and not public vote.

As for the food busines.. I'm getting a weird suspicion that Limp Ninja's Breakpoint Wild demo is a financial world domination devilish scheme!

Sushi anyone? =P

if it's just about whinning, so I don't care of this.

But if it's about that music old thread, so just some words: ppl (scene or whoever) should figure out when work is involved and then respect it. Otherwise, just die.

AMusic brings a lot of work to his music. It's obvious. You are free to like or not (I am not really much into them though) but we should avoid comments like the ones mentionned. These guyz just suck big time.

I am an asshole too when I do critics. But I know then that this is time to come back to creation and live this fucking internet.

I won't step into music/art criticsm, which is not the topic, I am sortof surprised of Bitfilm ppl writing such biased and personal opinions as "comments", expecially because they appear to be quite unbalanced between the different demos they selected.
BF people, expecially Aaron Koenig, are usually quite nice and professional dudes...

shifter: separate "the organizers" from "the actual crowd". :) the organizers might be pony-tailed, flash-addicted mac-hippies (though they didn't seem like that too me) but the crowd was mostly comprised of amateur movie-makers and students, as well as the occational industry professional. the only commonality was that they were all equally blown away by the demos when shown.

besides.. if you really want to get filthy rich - you can't beat this business plan

dixian: that is, indeed, the main point.

nothing wrong with submitting demos to numedia festivals, any help promoting the scene to other crowds can only be positive. atleast it might get attention of some new sceners, or feed ideas into people of other areas.

and nothing wrong with taking demos to all parties visited either. im sure ASD didnt get enough prizemoney to pay the plane tickets and time invested doing the productions.

festival publically insulting them is good grounds for whining imho. i atleast was happy to know about it and will defnitly mention it next time scene.org staff is discussing bitfilm presence. people who cant respect authors of submitted content shouldnt be getting any content submitted.

xen: when too long post to see authorname, scrool down, check authorname and move on when realizing who it is. nice simple rule to avoid stress. i use it all the time ^^

misspelling ASD is the actual intellectual crime commited there. if there's one thing that can go wrong and cause personal mischief, then it's people who could care less and just fuck up credits, or change things to their likeness.
