My two brothers stopped abusing the internet for a while to persuade me to not use the modem (But when I want to do a job and it's faster this way, ugh?). Anyways,. when they did that, it was a perfect DSL, I was browsing instantly. Well, I tried some games but there was still bad ping (cause the router is still blockin shit, that's what my brother tells me). But I don't care much about games here. Ok,. the internet is fine but since when? They agreed to download only at night but most times I browse at night! What if I decide to download something (not warez but few demos equalling 50MB total, taking 20 minutes from their browsing) at day? Anyways,. you see, DSL is fine for one person but I don't think we will ever like it together ;PPP Sucks, sucks, sucks,. I'll be still on the netcafes!

Optimus: you don't understand anything at IP technology it seems! Look at what Mr Twist Laser said: he knows what it talks about (a guy of experience in network!). IP networks is a maze and a mess: too many operators, too many things, imagine the telephony network melted with something even bigger with several companies, like a patched windows in fact... So you want constant maximum DSL speed? FORGET IT. Not all servers will deliver the same speed, even here with a 24 Mb/s line you don't get that speed. Because:
1/ Not the whole network is 24 Mb/s ready. That means if I download from a guy who has a 56 Kb/s modem then I get 56 Kb/s download speed (even less because IP have overhead, and some IP frames are lost so need to be sent again...). Try also to imagine a server with a limited bandwidth, let's said 100 KB/s, if I'am alone using it then I get 100 KB/s download but if we are 10, we get 10 KB/s... And usually we are more than 10!!! Why pouet is so slow for example??? It's exactly the same phenomenon with CPU cycles eated when you launch tons of applications: the whole system became slower.
2/ When you use P2P software, you upload too and people download a lot from your brothers' computers too. This upload bandwidth is taken away from your upload bandwidth (I speak of the bandwidth you've in your room with your OWN computer). And when upload is clogged, then you can't download because downloading means uploading to say to the server what you want. IP needs tons of uploading bits to download things. Install a good firewall and you'll see graphs of what happened on your network, you'll be surprised, promised. Check what your brothers download, if it's popular then you've found out were your upload bandwidth goes.
If you upgrade your DSL package to a bigger rate, be careful to upgrades the upload too because if you've get the same one, p2p will be even more slower!!! I advise you to look around on internet for statistic about ISP. Some site enable this and show comparison between ISP. You can get an overall faster internet experience with lower download and upload but a better ISP because they use proxies, they have enough bandwidth and guarantee constant download and upload bandwidth wheread others try to cheat you and others: they use bandwitch reshaping (if you don't use the bandwidth, they give it to others, ... This enable them to put more people on one pipe hence reducing cost).
I advise you to get to how stuff work website and look how DSL works. You'll see the miracle (the cable nightmare and the wold wide mess of networks, the mix of protocols, the ...).
And I advise you to take the time to understand ports, protocols and such things so you can configure your router efficiently. Note also that lots of people are hacking around so don't be surprised if sometimes your access is slow slow: you suffer a DOS: deny of service. Somebody try to hack your computer sending tons of requests. Or they try to enter your router (some can be controlled remotly, so change default password). Well you've been warned. Activate logging and you'll often see that the fishing party is good: some router can log DOS and others hacking attacks.
Another problem which is common comes from Ethernet: this kind of network if used without proper switch (no hub, they suxx because each data which arrive to one physical port is sent to all others ports making a big traffic jam of datas over the local network) is unreliable. So ensure your router is also a switch. And please post your router model number here. So we can hack you :d

Well, I'm not an network specialist, but when it comes to routers (NOT pure DSL modems), I had a very dissapointing experience with one of them. When using ANY kind of p2p (eDonkey,DC++,torrents...) it was working fine for something about 1 minute! After that, everything died. So, I took a look to my firewalls config, and there was about 150 open UDP connections, I don't remember the number of TCP ones.
Okay, I said to myself, it has to do something with the ports not being forwarded properly, well, no, I had them forwarded just fine (it was a hell to configure it). Some sites I looked up for answer said, it can't be fixed. Some routers just get flooded and it's over.
If anyone knows about some kind of solution to this, now would be a great time to share such experience :-)

F-L-T: The only this you can do is to update the firmware of such router. Routers are simply computers with several network cards. Firmware is their bios and OS. You can configure them that is tweaking their setup. And after that, that's finished! Like PC, routers aren't equal so if it's really rubbish hardware you've got then change it: all ISP don't give you the best hardware in town for sure. And a professional router can change your life but before if I were you, I would check forums to get a bit more information about the quality of your ISP's network because if it's rubbish then the best router on earth will not improve anything. For example some ISP filter their traffic and disable some ports meaning you've got to redirect trafic for P2P applications and sometimes this makes things really slow. They do this for various reasons:
1/ this is for legal means: no issue with majors and stuff: "look we don't accept p2p datas..."
2/ this is to save their bandwidth: less people using p2p equal more bandwidth for others
3/ less calls to the yet clogged hotline for p2p configuring (one of the most time consumming operation)

Routers who can't handle p2p lack memory and their tables are too tiny. So upgrade your hardware and know that professionnal routers cost a lot and are hard to configure like the cisco's ones.

As for the isp, if I try to test a forwarded port, which I select for the p2p (or a range of ports) it always worked fine, so I guess Telecom is not closing or stealthing them, but I know, that there exist HW devices which are capable of recognizing the packet type and so some (or all) of them can be dropped on specific ports.
The router I got from Telecom was Xavi r8122 I think, because I replaced that with my simple USB modem 4 months ago, no problems whatsover with it.

F-T-L: your router is dead because it's too old and if the firmware is no more updated you've got only one thing to do: write a new one yourself :) However if the 2 years old router FW is good, it can solve your problem. Try also to google with router name and p2p keywords: others have surely met the same issue and you can get some info from their experience.
However a router is useless if you've got only one computer connected to the internet.
To test all ports you can use netcat I think but you've got to find somebody else out there with the same ISP as you, ask him his / her IP and scan it with netcat. Of course you and she / he have to disable any kind of firewall for the test that is both hardware and software firewalls. BTW there should be online testers which can do this, try google as always.
The 1024 first ports are well known ports, the others aren't so well documented as the firsts.

A router is not useless for only one computer. If it's a good one, it can be 50% of your security against hackers from outside. The other 50% are a good security software package like firewall, anti-virus, anti-trojan, anti-spyware, anti-dialer in case you're using isdn etc. pp.
