Why rating the ranking as well as the prods ?

category: general [glöplog]

Here and there, I note a curious fact : Pouet.net people seem to have to rate not only a prod, but also its ranking at a demoparty.

On one hand, if the prod hasn't been well ranked at the party (not 1st, or even more missing from the podium), a sympathy phenomenon is happening, people naturally thumb up a good production in order to support the unlucky.

On the other hand, good prods that are not necessarely outstanding and that got ranked 1st (sometimes unexpected even for their authors), tend to raise some thumbs down, just because people think the prod doesn't deserve the 1st place.

I find it pretty unfair, because the authors simply are not responsible of their prod's ranking. That part is up to the party audience, who's not usually totally sober at the time of the voting duty.

I hereafter ask you, Pouet people, to place your thumbs according to prods quality, or your inside feelings about it, or your mother's opinion about it.

About the prod, not the ranking.

Courageously,
Willbe, defender of the unlucky 1st ranked ones

The explicit study of the foundations of a subject is usually of relatively little practical importance, for common sense and experience over the course of time develop a science more securely than it could possibly be built up by direct application of abstract principles. None the less, I believe that present-day discussions about Pouet glöps and rankings, about subjectivism and objectivism are stimulating practical advances in statistics. Willbe, work it out and become a popstar!

I totally agree with you Sir Willbe.

Well, this is not always true. Because of the schlinekberger force. This force is the force to make people experience nirvana without knowing or having made a shit to get there. So how does the schlinekberger force work? Well.. Imagine you are at a demoparty, you have had high expectations on the compos but the entries havent matched the quality you had pictured it wouldve. So what to do? You pick a mediocore to semi good production and go *wild* when its presented, everyone cheers and gets high on the feeling. Then they go back to pouet and thumb it up.

What then happens is the nasty sideeffect of the schlinekberger force: People who did not visit the party has no idea the production is so fucking excellent and starts finding bad stuff and also prolly claiming its nothing to bust your yaws about. But it has already happent, at this big parties there are so many people visiting and so many morons who just wants to reach nirvana off other peoples work. So, this production is now EXCELLENT and receives scene.org awards without anyone really knows why.

We all have good examples of this, Amiga democompo at BP has been like this since ever. ASM democompo last year, intro compo at ASM last time i was there and witnessed this fake sensation feelings in action (Zoom3).

So with the schlinekberger force in mind we should know that some of the "best" rated productions are pure crap.
