Demosceners and MMORPG's?

category: general [glöplog]
I'm into Guild Wars and Trackmania Nations as well, neither of them too much though (<10 hours a week).

So, what is "mmorpg" anyways? Something people do after drinking too much, as in: "Some Polish scener just mmorpged all over the info desk."???

blackpawn: the people/community is what makes it worth playing in the long run, I guess the same is true for any mmorpg really. My boyfriend plays on the same server as me, which is a big plus of course :)

I have one character in a raid guild, I have one that I mostly just use for roleplay, and I've recently made one on a PVP server to test that as well.

I've never played EQ so I can't really compare it to the sequel...the graphics are certainly a lot better.
I think there is a free trial version somewhere on the web if you want to give it a try.

I wanted to write this on the oneliner but I have already written something there: I've just figured out that the psychovideo is provoking faked shit that wants to detract UT gamers! D13 from my shock rifle!!! =)

Well, my biggest problem with mmorpg is that they can hardly be considered as Role Playing Games.
I watched some friends play Ultima Online and Meridian 59 back around 1998, but I only started myself with Everquest 1 (Ruins of Kunark). Played a Human ranger, played until I reached about level 25, and got incredibly frustrated by a shitload of 'features'. After having fumbled my 'epic' quest because of a missed 'dice roll' I decided to stop the whole stuff and cancel my account. (Just for record, just collecting all the parts of the bow I broke involved travelling between two continents and 3 different islands, representing something like about 20+ hours or real time boring activity).

Since I have very good friends that plays EQ2, I gave a shot, but well I'm working, and the real problem in these games is that the only interesting thing is the social interractions, unfortunately these games are designed so only homogeneous groups of adventurers can actually be together in quests (else somebody always get killed because it's too dangerous, or some people don't get any experience point due to the difference in levels). That mean that you CANNOT play with somebody that does not have the same playing patterns that you (ie: if you work and they don't, you have no chance keeping up the levels).

So well, these are supposed to be games, entertaining times, not 'xp rush and let finish the quest fast so I can do something else like crafting 35 sword handles to get some money in order to buy some bandage at the local market'...

so well I gave EQ2 too.

Tried WoW, different appearance, same basic underlying principles.

If you are really interested in mmos, you should read this page, it's written by somebody that has been designer on some well known mmos, can be entertaining too :)

Personaly I'm waiting for Oblivion, Fallout 3, Neverwinter Knights 2, and the next Might and Magic.
At least there is a real adventure, and the sole point is not to kill stuff or do pointless fedex like quests.

Gargaj: Fucking A! I had a 67+ character on PQ, started in my first job out of school in 2001...

Lord Grog: I've been WoW'ing since release, with friends who were in beta. Sadly WoWing is super bad for the wrists and had to take a break to let them heal :( but in my break I used super-lazy luaplayer to make a psp music disk instead of C coding a GBA prod and won a compo. So perhaps the lesson of WoW is that Lua will get you chicks.

I remember seeing a high level guild in Earth and Beyond called MadWizards.

Anyway: the stats. WoW, Level 45 gnome 'lock, and a few assorted alts less than 20. In the guild at workmy new char is only lvl 15.
Greif^H^H^H^H^HEvE online, miner char with the biggest mining ship (not the apoc but the dedicated mining ship) but I left eve as it's just a greifers paradise.
Auto Assault: lame, stupid game, guild wars in a wheelchair, slow and fugly. I won't admit to even downloading the 3Gb beta for this.

Anyway, when *I* was in school, all we had was MUDs like eotl.org, or rather stanford.edu:2010 . Brutal playerkilling, newbie-hostile MUD. I wasted a lot of time on that. If you want to graduate, for fuck's sake uninstall and cancel your subscriptions. The shareware for fucking Wacky Wheels and Terminal Velocity nearly fucked up my first year of uni.

And then I just finished FEAR in one day today. Oh, well.. I should be doing something more usefull. But wait, I was very tired with democoding recently that I wanted to relax :P

FPS ftw!

Dbug has a point, but I assure you the business is aware of the problem.
I used to play p(l)ay-by-mail RPG-s 10 years ago or so.

wait fedex type quests....

Good News, Everyone! You'll be delivering a package to the Nimbus 3!

For the record: I'm Bender.
mmorpg's are the biggest software con yet. You (cough) buy the game for 30EUR or whatever, then you have to pay all that again every single month just to play the game you bought.

To everyone that pays MMORPG subscripions: send $10 to happydude at...

Is it only me that finds online games massively boring then? A few friends round, a few beers, and a game of mariokart or something is great fun of course, but every time I've tried an online game of any kind a bit flashing light saying 'pointless time wasting material' appeared over the screen.
