Is there a scene in countries near Greece?

category: general [glöplog]

I have good moods but I'll open a normal and interesting(for me only?) thread now.

I just happened to see Galen from Bulgaria here again (hallo :) and also listen to an old music in nectarine which reminded me of an old demo from former Yugoslavia. And I wondered what's the condition of the scene in some countries near Greece? If I was living around central or northern Europe, there would be a lot of cool demoish countries around but here?

I'll write the facts and you tell me more:

Turkey: I know about this. Some quite cool PC and C64 scene activity there and there are people now here in Pouet (Hallo Skate :). I know several group names (mostly from C64) and their regular demoparty (how was it called I forgot, because it was a memory address or something ;). Promising!

Former Yugoslavia: I know some quite cool C64 sceners (Jailbird, DaFunk, Cybernator) but from which parts of the old Yugoslavia are you now? If that matters (sad thing though to see this country split apart :P). (I know Cybernator is from FYROM and we exchange email sometimes :). I have seen the demo Anger from Eastgate a lot of years ago. Were there more groups from Yugoslavia? Where there demoparties organised?

Bulgaria: I know Galen with his cool asm intros :). But anyone else? Was there some kind of a scene/demoparty/groups here? I also met several Bulgarian people once I was an Erasmus student in Karlsruhe and one was a coder and liked some demos. Perhaps he'd be interested to get involved but he was too busy with other stuff at the time. I know I have to contact with that guy again but we didn't exchanged much email..

Albania? I have heard NOTHING from there? Except from the great wild demo release of a guy who stole my purse with 50 euros and made me unhappy for one day (but perhaps he was Russian), but no hate really just phun, ok we had the problem with several Albanians here in Greece but I am just joking ;). Do you know something about any scener there?

Romania: Well, not near Greece but I just wanted to mention because it's another country I really wondered if there was a scene EVER. And the answer comes from Mihai, the only Romanian scener I know who wrote an article called Me and the Scene or something like that (can't remember now, it's either in Attitude 7 or Vandalism News 38 and I can't check now) where he explains there was no scene because some Char didn't permit foreign computers to come in Romania and so a whole generation lost the good old times of home micros! (What a pitty :P). I really liked that article, interesting and sad or funny, I had read it before and I once talked with Mihai in email, are you still alive?

I forgot Cyprus: But well, perhaps Cyprus and Greece feel the same so it doesn't make sense to separate, I know the scener ^gfx who gave us two nice demos for ReAct demoparties who is living and is from Cyprus iirc. But nothing else. Well, as few of you might know my mother is actually from Cyprus so whould that make me a scener from Cyprus or not? ;) But I don't know how to speak Cyprus pronounciation well, though I have been several times there and I like their sounding, also I dig xalumi, suzuko, zivania and lately KOOKOL too but only greeks might know what I am talking about here =)

What can you tell me esp. about Yugoslavia and Bulgaria (and perhaps Albania too?). And are there any other countries around Europe that you wonder if they actually have a scene/demoparties?

I don't understand. Did an Albanian steal your wallet at a demo party or something ?

No, that was a pun, because usually it's an Albanian or Russian here. Someone having nothing to do with the scene really stole my wallet in the bus and I was angry that day so I thought about mentioning it (He will have to share beers with me at the next Pixelshow :)

how do you know that he was albanian and not greek. After all, there are probably 10 times as many greeks than albanians around...

One day, one day..

Yes, we've a lot of scene activity in Turkiye. Just wait for 4 more days and you'll see all Nightshift compo results.

the scene in germany is quite big. i guess it qualifies as being near greece, as it's just a 60min flight away.

Off topic: Everybody is still using "Turkey" all over the world but it has changed to "Turkiye" ages ago. Just so you know :D

Nah, I still say Turkey :P

I spoke once with a Swedish guy that had done some c64-grfx for an Israeli group. This was years ago but perhaps there is a scene there too...

Turkei will have its second party within a year this weekend and there are plans of more \o/ I hope Nightshift will get great attendance.

And by the way I'll be at the first ReAct after my pockets fill and that's approximately 1.5 years time from now, scholarships don't make it :)
kosmoplovci indeed are from belgrade and used to organise demoparties there. do they still do demoscene? anyone?

Pas Matters are also ex-yugoslavian i believe, not sure which country anymore though.. but i was talking with djeko just the other day and he was mentioning some new prods, so i guess they're somewhat active too.

I swear to god I once saw an Israeli "demo", made around 1993 ? in quickbasic. I am trying to remember the name of the group ever since. The name was something ending in -ada (like cascada) I think. The graphics were very primitive, just some lines and blobs.

Anyone knows what I'm talking about ?

I remember I had seen that demo (I think it also displayed somewhere the israeli star with lines :) but I can't remember too.

Also, raven from 64ever (the coder of Insomnia), is from Israel and there were other groups at times (in Speccy too).

p.s. It's great to see the demoparties take place in Instabul, that's closer. Though I don't know when I'll be able to make it to foreign demoparties in my own. I try to finish my studies get a job and be independent. I was thinking to collect money for going to Breakpoint this year but now I doubt I can and have the guts too (parents and stuff too). That's sad but it's gonna change not far from now..
