GBA demos on real GBA

category: code [glöplog]

Question 1 (maybe stupid...):
Is it possible to run GBA demos on real GBA? Or you can just use it on emulator. If the answer is yes, Do we have to use a special cable, or what?

Question 2:
Do you know some useful links about GBA development tools?

thanks a lot Pouëters!

yes, you can plug GBA and PC for transferts

take a look to GBA Linker 128 Meg Pro Kit or to PC-Linker for GB/GBC/GBA here
another somewhat cheaper method than those flashcards is the mbv2 cable that you can get from http://www.lik-sang.com
however, with this cable, you upload your code to the ram of the gba (and not to a flashrom) so you are limited to 256kb of code/data. this might be enough for starting dev'ing, though.

but of course, with only a link-cable, and not a eeprom-burner, you are not able to play doom on your gba while travelling to the partyplace :)
(unless you've bought it of course :o)

Hi :-)

If you wanna make your own multiboot cable (a nice cheap dumb one %) take a look to www.godsmaze.org/gba, there you've got the schemas. It only works under DOS, but it's the just the cheapper solution. Smart cable works too much betterm, and run under DOS, all Windows and Linux :-)

Here's the link to a wild compo we made last Euskal Party 9 (out of time, we did it in the party) that shows how the dump cable works: http://godsmaze.org/download.php?op=getit&lid=1.

I'm using the gnu thumb stuff to compile, the flash linker to test on hardware, and mappy to test before putting on hardware. Mappy does an ok job but there's nothing like real hardware.

Overall it's a fantastic platform for demos. I don't play games on it really (:

This one of those "16 bit data bus = oldskool" platforms FRaNKy speaks of?

Hi alan. I'm a REAL gba developer, so disregard everything that all these other posers (except for exoticorn and skrebbel - but they are old) has written so far.

Most standard GBA flashcards are really God damn cumbersome to flash. I recomend getting one with a SD-card family adapter, because then you have a lot more space and a much more comfortable way of getting data to your GBA.

I have a M3 movie player which takes mini-SD cards, and besides being a little flakey, it works like a charm. I really like it and recomend that you get that.

Not though, that I haven't looked at other solutions for years.
selfproclaimed REAL - now, that's elite!
the last activity from alan seems to be from 2005, perhaps not revive threads this old?
