Some help with Windows
category: general [glöplog]
Ok, a serious post this time. I'm hoping some of you guys could help me sort out my PC. Basically I had to replce my motherboard and it wouldn't boot into windows so I've had to install a dual boot of windows to save all my documents and stuff being erased.
So, I boot into the fresh install of windows and all is working. Luckily all my old docs and programs are still on the drive. I could go through backing them all up, formatting drive and installing them again, but that's a nightmare.
So is there any way I can get my old settings back? Including all my messages from outlook express?
Ta

Oh yeah, and how to I delete the first installation of windows on the dual boot without formatting?
*hoping for more fearmoth trojans soon*
shane : if you replaced your motherboard it's probably a good idea to format your drive and start again
This is where the various rescue cd's would have been very helpful.
Such as a knoppix CD... or a PE boot CD...

Thanks. I've worked a way of restoring my settings and stuff, but I think you're right pete a format is in order! :P
Shane I think tools like Partition Magic can shuffle partitions around without having to reformat, but I concur with parapete, its probably best to reformat with a new mobo.
or norton disc doctor can do stuff. so can norton ghost. aaaaaand the best partitioning tool ever is EFDISK.EXE, to be put on a bootfloppy.
What you actually needed was the User State Migration Tool. Sounds like you've already gone past that point.
Ok, another question for the experts...
I installed a AMD Sempron 2800+ (socket A). It works ok, but windows is recognising it as a Athlon running at only 1.2ghz.
Any ideas how to get round this? There aren't any drivers or windows updates I have to install are there?

probably underclocked in the bios?
a weak troll anyway
I updated my bios, but I think my prob has something to do with the FSB jumpers now.
My processor is a Sempron 2800+ (Socket A) and I just want to know what I need to set the FSB jumpers to??
I think it might be 333mhz, but not sure. Would appreciate the help. Thanks!

I once fucked up my XPboot while trying to install Linux, then I wanted to go with WinXP CD to a command line to fix some stuff and I found out they have removed commands like xcopy or copy *.* and I think some more, and I had to fix stuff file by file. I still haven't understand (can you tell me?) why the fuck did M$ removed the necessary commands from the recovery console? What would the reason be?
Also, now I remembered it..
..very important problem.
My PC does again the same thing that also happened a year ago. Suddenly, when I do something a sudden reset happens. Hopefully, more rarely than ago..
It's quite possible there is something with the internet (virus?). The first time it happened, it was after I carried my PC to pixelshow demoparty and connected it first to the internet. Then I had spyware everywhere because of no protection. At home later, even if offline anymore, I got crashes. Now, when I am online I get crashes (2-3 only now). It could be the power supply (because it seems like something goes wrong with the power and there is reset), but also it could be some virus/spyware that causes a software reset (do you know something?). If I try a UPS and it still happens, then I'll know it might not be the hardware (some hardware I installed recently?) but perhaps a virus or another software. It's very annoying and I've lost a lot of Pouet messages this way..

lost pouet messages? oh no.
the easiest is to download an AV something, like nod32 or kaspersky - if you need'em to sweep thru your hard drive only once, the trial will do perfectly fine. But there are *ways* to get them, of course. Symantec offers a free online scan [but it works only under IE], that's worth a try.
Also, there are several spyware removal tools available, like dunno, Ad-Aware, MS Anti-Spyware, etc.
If the power still fails after having wiped your hd clean, then it's the power supply. But a fairly EASIER way would be to boot up a live linux, and do stuff in it for a while, and if it's the power supply, then even linux will shut down (yes, even LINUX fails, wow.)...
Or, you could just let the whole thing stay - we will understand.

Yay! I got it working by playing with the jumpers and also formatted and reinstalled windows. It's taking forever to restore all the stuff from DVDs back to my hard drive, but nice to start afresh some times.
The only thing bothering me now is if I lost my Outlook express addresses and emails. I have the pst files and stuff in my docs + settings folder but don't know how to restore them into outlook.

I have two partitions.
Windows and all programs go on drive D, which is NTFS.
My Documents and whatnot go on drive C, which is FAT32.
This way, I can shuffle operating systems all I want without to copy over my stuff each time. Plus, Linux also gets read/write access to the document partition with no extra effort.

install dos and watch old iso-demos. you'll achieve higher state of mind through them.
sh8n, there is supposed to be some "Import messages" or what in outlook. Anyway, you can just find the hidden system folder where that sort of shit is kept, it's in Documents and Settings\Local Settings\ somethings, as far as I can recall. You can just try copying yer olde emailes there.
My suggestion: buy a mac and stop wasting so much of your life fannying around trying to get the damn computer working. And watch demos on somebody elses computer.
