There aren't. The sceners are lazy, and it's hard to boot linux.

I just installed linux (I just got really fed up with windows). I might release some stuff in the near future.

I've been running linux since October. Thankfully my favorite production of 2005 has received a port: http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=18342

I found it easier to set up Japanese character entry for Linux (first attempt). Never could get it working under Windows.

Overall, the basic installation took less time than Windows XP -- once I overcame the problem of my USB keyboard not being recognized.

ATI drivers, on the other hand, blow some serious goats under Linux. I'm just may swap this X800 for an equivalent nVidia...

I think s_tec was planning at one point to port his demo engine to openGL and then linux, but who know if that's still on the cards.

At the risk of sounding... well... mean: it took you longer than a Windows XP install to figure it out, right? :)

Linux demos? Hurm. If I wanted to appeal to a demograph of a handful of people, I'd be making Xbox demos (oh...yeah).

it's easy to port productions to other platforms(at least if authors aren't abusing windows-only specific stuff too much) if authors wouldn't be so damn afraid to give away the "secret" source code to someone willing to do the port :)

shifter, this time i did get the joke all at once! \o/

waffle, the problem is usually that the source is 'secret' because it sucks bad. it's shame, not paranoia :)

OS is just a coders issue, music and gfx creation is quite OS independent (well, no one would use Linux as OS of choice for"multimedia").
Also, it's not a *nix, *dows or *sX demo, it's the platform that matters, so I'd rather refer to "PC", "PC + ps2.0", "PPC" etc. productions.
If an OS limits possibilities of using hardware resources/features, well, then it's just a bad one.

maybe it are them performance problems of d3d on *nix?

skrebbel: ok that's the main reason really ;)

The question is: is there really some *Nix demoscene followers ? Making a port for nothing is just silly ...

Stating this, i admit i installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago, and that cross-platform coding is one of my next 'codeshop' ^^

I make Linux prods but I don't know if that counts as supporting the *nix demoscene or as destroying it from inside :)

Of course not, once linux is installed a typical linux user will be compiling kernels 24/7.

indeed... the personal reason i don't use a linux distro is that "i like to use OSs, not just installing them" ;)

Japanese?
That's easy! Just add the jap keyboard, then you get the little IME thingy.
About the code: Is there in history any code that it's actually readable? I looked at my asm intro a few months ago and I have no clues of what's there! And I coded it alone!

"i like to use OSs, not just installing them"
I find pretty cool to try new linuxes... "will this format my disk without me knowing it?"

damn right! porting code is sooooo much fun, I´m about to shit my pants even just thinking about it!!!

I didn't really figure anything out, just used my MAME controller as a PS/2 keyboard ('coz that's what it is) to press "enter" to begin the installation process. That's all I needed to do.

On the other hand, my first attempt to install WinXP would crash periodically due to problems with the USB keyboard driver. That took a abit more figuring out.

All the same, it's totally stupid the Linux install couldn't recognize a USB keyboard right off the bat, especially considering it works just fine for changing BIOS settings.

Yes, and as soon as I clicked on the little blue system tray icon to switch input modes, windows would lock-up. Fan-fucking-tastic.

...It never happened to me.
My computer halted more times under linux, than under windows. Why do I want to code demos to a thing that isn't that good to watch demos?
The real linux is textmode, so a LTMDC whould be nice I guess.
