why?

Why does a painter paint? Why does a writer write? There's a variety of reasons I suppose, but I would imagine there are two particularly important reasons anybody does anything creative, and the demoscene is about creativity, if you ask me.
1) Because the map isn't the territory. What our models and senses say about this world are only what those models and senses are capable of saying at this time... and creativity reminds of this, and more importantly, advances our perceptions. It's an expression of the world and times we live in.
2) Because who we are changes as time goes on... we know transition, and so the creativity of the demoscene, and how it changes with the advancements of technology is not just a creative expression of our constantly changing world, but of ourselves as well.
Ah, but what do I know? Not much, not much. At the very least I'd say Preacher hit the question smack on the nose with "because it's fun". After all, if you can't have some fun doing something why do it at all?

Except that there are all those German film festivals that show demos.. and big parties like Assembly where 3000 gamers see them too ;)
Well Preacher, what we call small and large is subjective. I recently met a group of people in Hollywood who were developing a special effects software for movies. A few lucky demos can get to the audience of a German film festival, Lord of the Rings can get to millions of people worldwide. I'm not saying with this that a larger audience always improves your chances of self-expression. The hard-core crowd at a demoparty probably pays more attention to your work than casual movie-goers.
Gem, indeed. To me a thousand people is a large audience, and some of my demos have been downloaded many times more.
And, in some way, a small audience might actually also increase your chance of self expression because you don't have to please anyone. Could you imagine Steve Jackson putting fifteen minutes of noise and strange images in the middle of Return Of The King? :)

Preacher: that would SO totally rule! :)
Kusma: And flop at the box office. Unfortunately, because that would indeed so totally rule :(
DO IT FOR GOOD!

this is why:
1. get an idea for a great demo.
2.
3. profit.

Mmm..
..maybe I started because I found out all about this community, then I found the motivation recognition, then it all changed, then several things happened and now I don't know why I am here. Prolly I don't have anything better to do or I just like to continue working and improving on what I've learned to do. And there is the community who might applause for our creations. Usually I just want to feel like doing something. These days I am just playing games so it would at least feel great if I coded instead..

This moment I'm feeling that's beautiful, and I really want to meet that guy from the popular demo.
