American scene
category: general [glöplog]
Guess the reason for the european demoscene's rulage is that it's always been easier for people with creative computer skills to make a career out of it in the states. Generally it's my impression that if you're good at something in the US you can make a carreer out of it, while the labour market in Europe is more rigid, so people are less likely to find a job where they can use their talents. And therefore we have to waste our time making demos.
no. the real reason is that in the US the people who would become demosceners become starwars geeks instead.
Yeah... it was already borderline when we started seeing x-wings in demos.
The REAL reason is that the "scene" as we know it (intros, demos, MODs, BBS's, parties) evolved during the Amiga days. And the Amiga was always much more popular in Europe than in the USA.
According to the book "On the Edge - the incredible rise and fall of Commodore", it was all because of bad management and marketing. Commodore UK and Commodore Germany handled their own marketing.

Okkie: A black-white-red flag isn't suitable for one nation under god but it would heat the "German?" thread quite well.
Besides that: even nordmannen and the french know how to spell my nick. ;)

Wikipedia shows me something interesting.
Hail Atlantis!
Christ Maddy! now you bring Godwin down on us in less than 2 pages :D
Okkie: Haha, but my pals from Limp Ninja still hold the record.
Hail Atlantis!
I would respond to these allegations of death but I'm too busy attacking Iraq.
Iraqi's attacking you, rather :P
I think I prefer the thread with the pigs :(
yay Truck:
some more stuff to get busy with
some more stuff to get busy with
to keep in topic:
I always wondered why the releases from overseas are so
rar at all. Perhaps one can blame the whole construct of the
software industry which boomed once back then in
the 1980's when a coder was drafted right away from highschool
by the big ones.
And according to Commodores "huge" marketing fortune
in the US the majority of digital creative people turned to
the established platforms and started coding (f.e.) for a living.
Just like: "What you can't see (or get) you can't explore"
IMHO this fact is vital for a scene in general...see something , get it, explore/disassemble it,push it's limits to the max and create somthing stunning with it.
Ironicly the same slogan can be applied to the commercial way...in terms of "get the best out of the machine to make a buck and the world a bit easier".
like the comunity of Xerox PARC or Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston.
Maybe that's what became tradition in the states?!
Either going underground (warez=>ANSI/ASCII) or
go the commerce way...

I love America's Army. It's free, and paid by american taxes. What better can unitedians statedians of americans can give us than good freeware games?
And can't they separate the state and the church?

Oh, and ATLANTIS is in AÇORES, PORTUGAL! I've played Indiana Jones and the fate of atlantis and I know it!
for whatever reason usa coders gravitate towards making games instead of demos. can't speak for the artists or musicians.
I would comment but I'm busy fighting the war against Christmas.
God can't make demo. That's why they don't think it's something possible.
\o/ hey I've heard about this...
those crazy christians in U.S. appealing to boycott stores and
companies that only wish 'great holidays' just to avoid trouble with non-christian relegions :D
