The type of scener who isn't going to put up with what someone else tells them is THE way to do it uses gentoo, or occasionally linux from scratch.

Cuz then they make it work their way.

Like, on mine, topaz as both the console font and the main X font; amiwm or fluxbox with Amiga style layout; or Enlightenment with eye candy out the trucking ass; ion for when I don't feel like using a mouse; xemacs, jed, and ABSOLUTELY NO GODDAMN VI PIECE OF SHIT, and aterm and Eterm for connection to shells via ssh. uade, ogg123 and mpg123.

Dixan: Dynabolik rox. Boots on Xbox. Needs maybe another tracker or two to be totally usable for the scene but maybe not.

Ion is really nice indeed. If you are sick of all those slow, eye candy ridden window managers (KDE, Gnome) and want to use the keyboard instead of the mouse then Ion is the way to go :) If you can't handle more abstract window management then stay away from it.

mnem: or window maker is even better for that, tho after years of using ms-dos and norton commander i kinda prefer window managers the kde/gnome style.. oh the agony of typing instead of a simple mouse-drag :P

haven't been using desktop-linux for about 4 years; but for starters: slackware, icewm/ion, rox.

btw: is it possible now under linux/x11 to choose the wm on a per-screen basis (instead of per-xserver) ?

i guess not but this would be neat. could be done using a kind of "meta-wm" ;) multiple screens are what I liked best about desktop linux (in terms of usability).

Truck: I did the intro jingle for dynabolic and Jaromil is a demoscene hangaround (he also was in the orga team of some italian demoparties back in the mid 90s) so it _has_ to be a demoscene friendly distro ;) (or perhaps not).

blackbox is a window manager, not a distro.

I for myself have no favourite linux distro as with all I used so far I found alot of things that sucked badly (which is a problem of the OS, not a certain distro).
so currently I go with uncle-x : Win XP
my installed linux right now is kubuntu which works quite fine... so, from the few I already used, some kind of favourite.

styx: I know but I allready wrote that my favourite distro is slackware and since ppl were writing about window managers and whatnot I figured I might aswell post.

OS killed the scene. The DivX came and fixed compatibility issues :)

I'm on kubuntu, but a while back I ran mepis(.org) for quite some time, which I was also very fund of. Anything debian based works for me right now.
