WinCE demos?

category: general [glöplog]
There isn't a platform entry for this, but WinCE is becoming more capable all the time. I recently was shown even some *managed* Direct3D stuff on it. Has anyone made demos for it?

You owe me a new keyboard, this one has coffee in it.

I would think it'd be a good choice. It has a free toolset with emulators, it's pretty approachable, and has that oldskool appeal -- though managed DX isn't very oldskool..

damn! what is it with you non-dutch demosceners (and havoc) and oldschool? it's, like, *history*. you know, old. not more relevant than a nice framed picture of what you looked like when you were six.

really, "the oldschool appeal" is *NOT* an advantage. it's the most stupid reason anyone did anything for ever.

I guess after hypnoglow we should also state that:
Oldskool is not an effect.

yay! jamba!

and skrebbel! you are just too young to understand!! If you where around when the computers were still made of wood and used 2 squirrels instead of processors, you would adore the oldskool too!!! Now run to the kiosk and get me a coffee, these legs aren't working as properly as they used to, back in the 50's!

OK, maybe I was thinking of Windows Mobile and not Windows CE; I thought they were the same, but they apparently aren't. All I know is that at the recent MVP Summit some mobile device MVPs were showing me cool 3D shit on their pocket PCs.

then how about if you go to the prodlist.php and select pocketpc from the platforms.

dodke well obviously I know next to nothing about these mobile devices other than they exist. I don't know what the difference is between pocketpc, "Windows Mobile" or WinCE. I was hoping to point the mobile device MVPs at something cool, but there doesn't seem to be much on here.

legalize: Windows Mobile on PocketPC's doesn't have Direct3D or even DirectX at all given the lack of the need for it as it's not a multimedia device - for games, MS offers a thing called GAPI or GX.DLL, which is essentially a quick (and very demo-friendly) way to get access to a fullscreen backbuffer.

The hardware (at least my iPAQ) is more or less equivalent to a midschool PC without floating point. You get 320x240 24-bits plus decent 44kHz sound quality (depending on how do you output the sound, mine has a headphone jack, but the built in speaker is pretty ok too).

The only quirks I found while coding it (which will hopefully result in a demo sooner or later) is the fact that it doesn't have a "current directory" so you have to absolutely address every file, and the weird characteristic that only allows you to read from aligned addresses, iow dwords only from the multiples of four addresses, words only from multiples of two addresses, etc.

It's basically a nice playaround platform for someone who wants to tinker with software rendering. :)

Gargaj umm... I think you must be a little uninformed, because the guy whipped out his mobile device and most definately showed me a piece of code written using Managed DirectX and the .NET Compact Framework and it most definately used Direct3D. Also, I'm told by the same people that newer devices do have accelerators on them.
