Please help me watch 73 million seconds by Pulse again

category: general [glöplog]
I love this demo, its my favorite ever, but my comp is too modern to run it. On the prod page there are tantilizing links to videos, but they are long dead. This is just a humble request by a longtime scener to watch one of the best demos ever once again.

Download DosBox : http://dosbox.sourceforge.net
I suggest you downloading a frontend too!
And then launch it, it should run like a charm.

I tried it, it says "Fatal Error: Out of Memory"

messed around with the dosbox.conf for a good couple days with it too.

Not to mention it's slow on my (admittedly old) PC, so it wouldn't be able to run the demo well at all.

What is your full config and what's required for the demo?
Often demos don't run due to sound card but in your case you seems to not have enough RAM.
Download the AVI and watch that or sends us more info.

There is no AVI.

None.

If there is, I can't find it.

AFAIK, dosbox autoconfigures most memory usage, and for some reason the memory handler in dosbox doesn't like this demo. Here's my specs if this helps:

Athlon T-bird 1.4ghz
768mb ram
ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
Windows XP with SP2

I changed a mem setting in dosbox, and it now gets passed the "Fatal Error: Out of Memory" part, but still says "Problem with graphics adapter - could not initialize any video mode. Try running UNIVBE."

here's my dosbox conf (dosbox 0.63):

Code: [sdl] # fullscreen -- Start dosbox directly in fullscreen. # fulldouble -- Use double buffering in fullscreen. # fullfixed -- Don't resize the screen when in fullscreen. # fullresolution -- What resolution to use for fullscreen, use together with fullfixed. # output -- What to use for output: surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw. # hwscale -- Extra scaling of window if the output device supports hardware scaling. # autolock -- Mouse will automatically lock, if you click on the screen. # sensitiviy -- Mouse sensitivity. # waitonerror -- Wait before closing the console if dosbox has an error. # priority -- Priority levels for dosbox: lower, normal, higher, highest. # Second entry behind the comma is for when dosbox is not focused/minimized. # mapperfile -- File used to load/save the key/event mappings from. fullscreen=false fulldouble=false fullfixed=false fullresolution=1024x768 output=surface hwscale=1.00 autolock=true sensitivity=100 waitonerror=true priority=higher, normal mapperfile=mapper.txt [dosbox] # language -- Select another language file. # memsize -- Amount of memory dosbox has in megabytes. # machine -- The type of machine tries to emulate:hercules, cga, tandy, vga. # captures -- Directory where things like wave, midi, screenshot get captured. language= machine=vga captures=capture memsize=128 [render] # frameskip -- How many frames dosbox skips before drawing one. # aspect -- Do aspect correction. # scaler -- Scaler used to enlarge/enhance low resolution modes. # Supported are none,normal2x,advmame2x,advmame3x,advinterp2x,interp2x,tv2x. frameskip=1 aspect=false scaler=normal2x [cpu] # core -- CPU Core used in emulation: simple, normal, full, dynamic. # cycles -- Amount of instructions dosbox tries to emulate each millisecond. # Setting this higher than your machine can handle is bad! # cycleup -- Amount of cycles to increase/decrease with keycombo. # cycledown Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage. core=dynamic cycles=33000 cycleup=500 cycledown=5 [mixer] # nosound -- Enable silent mode, sound is still emulated though. # rate -- Mixer sample rate, setting any devices higher than this will # probably lower their sound quality. # blocksize -- Mixer block size, larger blocks might help sound stuttering # but sound will also be more lagged. # prebuffer -- How many milliseconds of data to keep on top of the blocksize. nosound=false rate=22050 blocksize=2048 prebuffer=10 [midi] # mpu401 -- Enable MPU-401 Emulation. # intelligent -- Operate in Intelligent mode. # device -- Device that will receive the MIDI data from MPU-401. # This can be default,alsa,oss,win32,coreaudio,none. # config -- Special configuration options for the device. mpu401=true intelligent=true device=default

but the real fun with old demos is to get them running, and not to actually watch them!
and so i won't spoil your experience... :)

afaik, dosbox only supports 8bpp (vesa) videomodes and 73 ms probably uses a 16bpp or 24/32bpp mode.

UNIVBE!
actually i think there's an avi made by trixter around the time when mindcandy vol. 1 was about to be released. 73 million seconds didn't fit to the dvd (a shame, really) so they spread it on their servers instead. so there is a video, i don't think it's just online anymore... perhaps the friendly folks from mindcandy could upload it to scene.org?

i still have it on my hd, but it's mpeg-2, 136mb. bigger than the vcd/svcd clips, but hey, what's a few megabytes here and there these days, right? :) and it's dvd quality.. i could upload it when i get home.

trixter made the damn thing, so he should get props too.

anyway, /incoming/demos/groups/pulse/73million_dvd.mpg.good.. there it is. just kill the other one and rename that one.

scene.org doesn't have a /incoming/ anymore.

actually, I found the mpg's UNS3EN's post referred to, so scratch that. However, I seem to be unable to download them?

firefox gives me a "no such file or directory" error
