Single Effect compos !?
category: general [glöplog]
Is/was there such thing as a compo/category where a single effect was presented (no music / a few seconds each) ?
We had a compo a while ago over here, and it was fun because many more people could compete, who would normally don't participate in demo compos (large production costs in terms of time, effort etc.).

This concept sounds very boring to me...
Small intros such as 256b often show just single effects.
I think the idea is nice - as you said, many more people would participate, and maybe it would result in a few more ideas for effects that could be integrated in demos. I could even imagine participating in such a compo.

think of it as chimera with sound turned off ..oh wait...
windows 1k single fx compos may be interesting.
Let's not make any limitations regarding platform and filesize. Let's have an open area for everybody.
IIRC, fr-26 was an entry in such a compo. From the source:
; rules were to write a "colorcycling" (no real colorcycling was
; required, only colorcycling-like animation) effect that display
; a x * y-ish pattern somewhere on the screen. the palette was
; required to look like the original version.

Many sizecoding compos are like that.

No size limitations for this one.. just do what you please for a few seconds..
mfx already took part to such a compo in the past ... it was called the demo compo :)
^^ and they ruled!
I like the idea, but I guess the hard part is how to define an 'effect'. If it's a plasma or a landscape, fine, but if it's a tunnel morphing into a spikeball transforming into a fractal zoomer, is it an effect or something else?

well, I guess it is down to the people voting...
let's do a sinescroller in 64 ko which would suck hard off course but it does not count because it's oldskool 'bro !
Scrollers rule.
I really like the idea!
A good way to do this would be to awaken the good old idea of Mega demos on Atari ST---Union demo and Swedish New Year Demo from 1989 are both good examples.
Such mega demos were made by several groups that met and had a party. They all made one or two "screens" or effects each, and then made a joint prod with a screen chooser to tie it all together.
If we had the kind of effect compo that Navis proposes we could release the best five or ten effects as a combined party prod. Great for scene bonding too!
Imagine having a demo with effects from ASD, Farbrausch, Conspiracy and rgba ... :-)

I think it would be very frustrating for someone to put together effects written in different engines. And also pretty pointless. -
My proposal was a compo where the objective was to present an effect (lets say 10-15 secs of 'something' interesting, without progression/transitions/music). You can have any number of models / size you want. Just be resonable.
Example of 'single effects' : The 'hypnoglow', a few seconds off any .plastic demos, the 'DOF' effect in we cell...

I'd definitely participate if such a thing would be organized somewhere.
What's the definition of an "effect" again :)
I had first experienced this in the previous Infosystem near my place (a computer expo, where some sceners got a stand at the place and decided to show some demos there to attract people), and since we wanted to participate in a compo jff and there was no time for a demo compo, we thought of this idea. And it was fun! (I personally brought some old OGL effect, the first one I did when I was first learning from NeHe three years ago (before I started playing 3d games instead of learning more ;)). I'd like to experience the same compo for the incoming event at Infosystem 2005.
The definition of what an effect is, is subjective. But the organiser said "Bring something, even if it's one short screen with more than one effect in it, or a 3d scene. It's just for fun!".
I personally like and support ManJIT's idea just because I know it from CPC except from AtariST and that brings memories. It was also usual in CPC meetings, that each person brought his own separate screen and all connected together in one megademo (You had to press space to go to the next part). I just like it because it brings me memories..

Crap idea
Navis, in the Atari days selecting a "screen" or an effect meant it was first loaded and then shown since a whole mega demo couldn't fit in mem. This delay didn't spoil the experience, at least not back then ;-).
If the effects in the final prod do not require too much of precalcing (textures, building models out of primitives etc) the effect selection framework doesn't have to be too much work. I'm just thinking of a nice packaging of the winning effects, not a merge of the engines or requirements to use a certain "standard" engine.
In any case such packaging would be a lot nicer than to download 10 separate effect files, or what do you think?
