I wonder how long it'll take one of the big prizemoney demoparties to hold machinima compos
category: general [glöplog]
Actually, I prefer his other latest machinima, Person2184 (http://www.person2184.com/) .. it is really worth checking out, too bad the video there is lo-fi. Having seen it running live at FMX and hearing him talk about the work behind it made it all the more interesting. (And as he stated at some point, he likes moppi demos and it shows ;)
hmmmm this is rather interesting. we're going to seriously consider having a machinima compo at demozone - an excellent place for such a compo considering there's thousands of non-sceners just around the corner.
the problem with machinima is that the name is so fucking stupid. other than that, why not?
But then again, 'demoscene' is just as stupid and misleading. :)
Knos: Ah yes - I have to correct myself; It wasn't the We Cell DOF thingy he coded in UT, but the flower effect from the Moppi-ASM Invi.
Don't bother trying to sell Machinima to me... I know what it is... I watched The Journey, and I've already said what I think of it.
yes, must say that The Journey is quite shitty. okish visuals and direction but the soundtrack and pace is just mindnumbing :P
machinima is like the same 'level' as werkkzeug demos to me, so if we accept werkkzeug shit at demoparties, so should machinima stuff too, i guess. [we also can get rid of the fugly non-fr werkkzeug stuff by tucking em in a different category :D]

GREAT! Lets introduce machinima compos so we can finally unload all the demomaker stuff there!
.WZ=MACHINIMA!
.WZ=MACHINIMA!
"demoengine democompo"
I'm all for it, it might even motivate quake kiddies to actually start contributing something sensible to the parties at which they're present. And, perhaps, to the demoscene in the future.

the demoscene is proud of having PETSCII wanking in a BP-winner demo, so who are we to criticize?
I am not in that demoscene you speak of. Stop being overzealous about people being overzealous :)
i don't see the problem. making a demo is making a demo. everybody is thumbing up optimus' doomonstration cause it's so 'refreshing'
who gives a shit where the prod is made in, even if it's a game.

heuh... you're going too fast there.. optimus' doomonstration is a onetime gimmick, not a whole genre of newcomers etc :)
yeah yeah.. ofcourse.. still i have a valid point you bastard :)
anyway, i am probably biased since i work in games, but i like the idea of using game editors for more creative things.
I do concur with Uncle-X though, Machinima is a horrible shit name.

AND YOU WORK FOR JAMBA! There goes your reliability, idiot! ;)
As a coder, I've always been mainly attracted to the code in demos/intros... Things like werkkzeug and this Machinima stuff will move the focus from code (for as far as that hasn't happened already) to artsy stuff that I really cannot relate to, and which just bores me to tears, honestly.
We already have a category that I completely hate and rarely pay attention to... namely wild-demos... Can't we just lump in the Machinima crap with the rest of the artsy non-coder stuff? And put werkkzeug-stuff in there while you're at it. As far as I'm concerned, it's all the same.
I can at least appreciate Red vs Blue because they just use Machinima as a means to bring their comic sketches to life. But I'm not exactly waiting for even more compos with boring artsy stuff and no code. I think it will shift the balance of code vs design even further, and push coders out of the demoscene altogether. So, well, if there's Machinima stuff, lump it in the wild compo if you like, but let's not start attracting those people to our parties and alienate the scene even further from its roots, and let it degenerate from a geek/nerd thing to nothing but regular art with some prefab PC software as the canvas.
Imho if the Machinima people really want to join the scene, they should join it properly, which means hooking up with some democoders or using some 'standard' scene tools like Demopaja or werkkzeug.
And ofcourse real scene coders will gladly help to provide tools that are at least as good as this Machinima stuff.
Ofcourse I'm the only one who feels this way, and nobody cares anyway, so just ignore my little rant here. Have a nice day.

i'm not working for jamba yet dear maddy, don't jump to conclusions that fast. :)

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT'S COMING, BITCH
I don't care what it is, as long as it's realtime and it looks good. And this is from the viewpoint of a coder.
^^^^^ agreed completely.
I also like stuff that looks good.
i dont wanna sound too oldskool, but isnt the demoscene ideology all about a symbiosis of coders, musicians and artists working on a production? somehow machinima doesnt really blend in on that matter.
i can understand artists tho. not every artist has a chaos/fr, smash/flt or boyc/cns on the technical aspect, so using ready-mades seems to them a decent alternative.

in a perfect world where the rivers are filled with beer and naked women grow on trees...
it's not farfetched... actually 98% of the current demoscene still works this way, right? :P (if they get arsed to do stuff that is :P)
Well, it once worked that way, and as far as I'm concerned, it should work that way, or not work at all.
Demos revolved around high-quality code, where musicians and designers/whatever artists put that code to good use.
If you take away that code, you just end up with a wild-demo which happens to be rendered in realtime... But what's the point in that? We already know that PCs are fast enough to run most scenes/effects in realtime. We also know that gamecoders can code engines that are able to render these scenes/effects... To me there's nothing interesting there code-wise, so the whole point of it being realtime is gone. It's all code we've seen before.
Apart from that, most game engines are already outdated by the time they are released. Doom3 being a fine example of that. Its shading capabilities are based on the original GeForce, and because it uses CPU-based geometry processing for such legacy hardware support, it is very limited in the scenes it can display (lowpoly, pointlights with small range, etc).
Even demos don't have such low standards anymore.
Surely there must be more than 3 coders around who can supply artists with better engines than something like Doom3 or Unreal for their artwork?
And if not, well, tough... The demoscene is an elitist scene, and if you're not good enough, please go away instead of forcing your inferior crap on me! :)
This is all my personal opinion, and in no way reflects the entire scene.
