Since BP and MS were the biggest parties I've ever visited and "back in the days" some other parties were pretty cool I'd like to know what a feeling it was for you to be at such a big party like ASM, TCC, TG, TP, ...

Tell your best memories. ;)
TP94: First demoparty I attended. Pretty awesome, very overwhelming. Met some pretty interesting people there. Having to traverse two halls to get to a sleeping area felt very dwarfing. I think this was the one where FC had pizzas delivered at the infodesk, much to the "amusement" of the infodesk.

TP97 was quite nice, i remember driving there with neo, klinz and gnoek in the big merc from neo's dad. (we were not allowed to drive neo's beat up ford fiesta :)) Then sleeping in the car since i was fucking wrecked and waking up during a huge fuckoff powerfailure. (the whole city of aars was plunged in darkness.) running around the hall screaming various demosceners names and causing havoc. And ofcourse the led-scroller from the mekka ppl which they hooked up to a car battery and were walking through the hall with. 'Come to visit mekke symposium 98, we guarantee power!'

Also turning in 'Stash' for TBL was quite amazing (and watching it during the compo giggeling when everybody thought it was over and the second part kicked in) and the huge applause for 'kolme pienta pukkia' from Moppi in the democompo. (A shit boring, rectum cauda filled, 15 hour long democompo that was) and watching 'Tribes' on the bigscreen. (and dissing it to shit after the compo, but secretly being quite impressed :))

Oh, and the 'lets talk shit constantly' compo i had with Facet and his buddy was quite cool, everytime we met we did this 'talk random crap in dutch' routine. For some reason immensly entertaining. Oh and a very drunk Probe/TBL feeling me up when sitting on my lap, that was scary beyond belief!

And for TP98 for me, getting played in the music compo (and finishing 6th) was quite cool and just hanging out with the huge crowd of dutch people that where there that year. Meeting some guys i only talked to on the interweb (for the first time)

ah.. good memories.. although in 1998, theparty was already VERY gamer infested.. beginning of the end.

Yoda just told me the message was "we invite you to mekka&symposium 98, the friendly party with power for everyone".
ah well, it's bloody 8 years ago and i was quite 'under the influence' :)

Okkie: Don't forget the best part of TP97: The release of Second Reality for C64. Definately one of the most impressive releases I've ever witnessed on a party :-)

But to answer MadenManns question, my feeling towards the big parties is mostly negative. I visited TP 5 times and TG 3 times and from those TP97 and TG97 were very nice, TP98 and TG98 were quite ok, but the rest pretty much sucked, especially TP95, TP2000 and TG99 were terrible IMHO.

My worst experience ever was at TP2000 when some security guy said something like "Fuck your computers" when we complained about the snow blowing in through the wide open doors in the middle of the winter. For me that basically summarizes the big parties: Too many people who don't give a shit about the scene and the sceners who visit their parties.

Assembly'96. Wandering around with my then best friend with our eyes as big as saucers.. just looking at all these people. Not knowing anybody, not knowing what to do, just.. wandering. And watching the compos, which ruled. And talking with the Housemarque people. And meeting Mat/Ozone. And getting a lecture in Swedish from a drunk Swede about optimizing polygon fillers in assembly language.. while just about grasping the concept of a polygon filler. A great experience for a 14-year old geekling.. it was then when I finally decided that I want to participate in addition to just enjoying demos.

Somehow I picture Kalms :)

No, it wasn't Kalms.. though I did meet him at Asm'99 and he spent like the entire night with me and my friend, explaining all kinds of cool stuff to budding demo coders. We were just having crappyburgers at Hesburger, I think it was late saturday evening.. and he just sat at our table, asked how we were doing, that sort of stuff.. then we started talking about coding. We had just released our first production which kind of sucked, and I still owe him big thanks for teaching me some of the first "real" tricks of graphics coding I know. Stuff like subpixel, subtexel, some assembly language tricks, how to do a real radial blur..

Hmm.. Big party pary memories. I have too many of those.. But i guess among the best ones are for example TP98 when we imvoted a journalist from the biggest tabloid newspaper in norway to travel with us on our bus. On the ferry from norway to denmark he hung out with the weed smoking norwegian up on the deck. I think he was a "tad" surprised to see the nerds of norway not being exactly as he expected. The article he wrote about the trip afterwards was actually pretty ok all things considered (like misquoting me so badly it looked like i was telling that everyone in the whole damn norwegian scene used me for support when there were things they couldnt figure out).

Oh and TP97 when arcane and numen had a "play fight" at the back of our bus, resulting in arcane starting to nosebleed. drunk as he was he never realised he had to change his (white) pants, so he went the whole party with blood stains on him :)

But mainly those bigger parties were in the beginning about travelling with a lot of friends, having some alcohol and seeing the compos, then it was about meeting people you almost never saw, and then all the bigger parties except asm went down and got bad, and nowadays the gathering is climbing back up which is good.

but my best memories will still be from ms and bp i guess :)

I started visiting parties 1991, Hackerence IV being my first. We travelled by train and carried our Ataris, Amigas and TVs quite far.

Coolest things at Hackerence'91:
* Seeing Lizardking compose 4 channel mods
* Copying Phenomena's "Enigma" and watching it a zillion times
* Logging in to Murphy's BBS and paying to download pictures

The two big parties I visited in those days were ECES 1991 in Eskilstuna, Sweden, and The Computer Crossroads 1993 in Göteborg, Sweden.

ECES was held in a school and there were people sitting in classrooms everywhere!

Coolest things at ECES'91:
* Saw and heard Firefox/Phenomena play the Enigma tune live on his synth
* Azatoth/Phenomena came by our computer place and helped my friend with his code
* I voted in a demo compo for the first time

TCC was held in Svenska mässan, a HUGE facility for business fairs.

Coolest things at TCC'93:
* Saw Triton's "Crystal Dreams II" win the PC demo compo and actually heard Amiga sceners say "Shit, there goes the scene" with sadness and despair in their voices.
* Swedish national TV featured pictures from the party on the news (Aktuellt)

Uncool things att TCC'93:
* My friend got his computer stolen and he wasn't the only one
* There were a lot of nazis walking around with Swedish flags. They also recruited alot of new guys who had to shave their heads at the party. It made a mess of the bathrooms.

TP9, first massive party I ever went to.
I tried to steal someone's monitor and hide it under my shirt. Unfortunately they saw through my otherwise flawless plan and prevented that, the bastards!

I think we were very close to being the most annoying demogroup in the world. Although that asshole tracking a techno mod while I was trying to catch some Z's should have been shot.

Also, during one night, we were bored and just walked around. We saw porn on some guy's TV in the big screen hall (next to all the other idiots who brought frikkin' microwaves and refrigerators into the party place). Anyway, back to the vid: so the guy undresses his girl right? Then he goes down on her right? Turns out she had a goddamn man snake between her otherwise sumptuous legs!! If the guy who owned that vid's on pouet.net: THANKS FOR THAT.

you know i was thinking about it the other day, and on all big parties i remember attending i was either extremly depressed or extremly drunk, or both. asm really tiping the scale of things on several occasions by several reasons.

meeting sceners is so nice!
