I have been lurking in the shadows for a while now for very similar reasons to the ones Gargaj listed in his post. I just decided to log in after all these years and wanted to say a huge, heartfelt thank you for all your hard work and dedication to us, and not just in terms of pouet but also for helping quite a few of us become the people we are today. Once again, thank you.
Thank you Gargaj. You gave a completely outsized contribution, so far on the outskirts of the normal distribution it's difficult to understand from the center.
Making moderation calls and dealing with the consequences fucking sucks and is stressful even on the best of days and when making the least controversial, most obvious calls. Thanks for doing it as long as you did, Gargaj, and thanks for not just stopping on the spot or quietly stopping to do stuff, as you might well have.

I relate to this 100%. I've been visiting Pouet since almost its inception, although I only registered a few years later. I met Gargaj through some IRC channel back in the day, and he always came across as a really nice and approachable person.
I've always been drawn to the creative side of things, seeing what people come up with, learning how they work, their workflows, processes and tools. I love building tools myself, and I especially love that moment when all those little pieces of the creative process finally come together into a prod.
That's probably why, despite not really enjoying the harsher and more toxic side of the scene that has sometimes surrounded Pouet over the years, I've kept coming back to the site so often. There is so much creativity and passion here, and that's the part I've always cared about most.
So, to Gargaj and everyone else who has put so much time and effort into Pouet: thank you. I really mean it.
I hope you're able to find your way back to the parts of the scene that bring you joy, whatever those may be. Some of your prods, especially the 64k intros, have been a huge inspiration to me. And I think there are still plenty of younger people out there who may not post on Pouet or show up at parties, but who are quietly enjoying making things, learning, experimenting, and being creative.
So yeah, thank you to all the people who keep the good side of the demoscene alive, the admins, party organizers, coders, artists, musicians, toolmakers, and everyone else who puts their time and energy into creating things, sharing, helping others, and building a positive community around what we love.
I'd really love to see things get better from here: a healthier community, with veterans inspiring new generations and new people finding their own way into the scene.
I'll certainly try to do my part, in my own small way.

This morning in this thread I said I'd try to do my part in my own small way. Here it is, a few hours later: a proposal for a new pouet feature, with the code already written and running: reactions on BBS posts and prod comments. Click an emoji under a message and it goes there with your name on it, hover it and you see who else did. It's a fork you can run on your own machine in two commands, so you can judge it by using it instead of by reading about it.
The reasoning in one line: on pouet you either write a post or you are invisible, so the only opinions that get counted are the ones from people willing to pay for a post. That is why appreciation only shows up when somebody quits, and why the first feedback anyone gets for behaving badly comes late, in private, from a moderator. A reaction costs one click.
It does NOT hide, fold, sort or report anything. No count feeds a moderation queue, no threshold triggers anything. Same choice GitHub make.
To try it you need Docker and just, then in the unzipped folder:

The full rationale, screenshots of every screen and an honest list of what has NOT been tested (scale above all) are in docs/proposals/reactions.md inside that zip. It's pouet-www at master, 0f2d5aa, with one commit on top.

It could provide useful signals without putting the entire burden of judging every situation on the moderators.
More importantly, it could give people who repeatedly cross a line some feedback about how their behaviour is being perceived, and potentially give them a chance to adjust before things escalate. It wouldn’t replace moderation or mean that the majority is automatically right, but it could give everyone a little more context about how the community sees a particular discussion.
I also think this could help avoid situations where people who have contributed a lot to the scene eventually decide to leave because they feel the overall experience hasn’t improved. If the community has a way to express its opinion more directly, perhaps some of these situations can be addressed earlier rather than only becoming a moderation issue once things have already gone too far.
Of course, people will still say whatever they want, and reactions won’t magically solve everything. But it seems worth giving it a try and seeing what kind of signals emerge over time.
Ultimately, it’s up to you. The feature is there now, so perhaps give it some time and see whether it improves things. If it doesn’t, nothing stops us from changing or removing it later. I just think it’s worth experimenting with rather than leaving things exactly as they are.

Adding reactions to pouët comments is a terrible idea, it wouldn't improve anything. Besides, it's the behaviour of certain people such needs to be fixed, not the website.
Honestly I can see the merits of emoji reactions for these situations (and other out-of-band signals like Reddit-style voting) - if some asshat is derailing a thread and making it about themselves, it's good to be able to communicate "everyone thinks you're an asshat" in a way that doesn't involve 10 people shouting at said asshat and derailing it even more.
Right now I'd say the priority is getting a moderation structure in place that doesn't depend on one guy who isn't actively following the site, though.

sorry, but i'd prefer not to have this kind of thing in place. if anything, we need _less_ "social media" vibe on pouet, not more.
