On using tools like Notch for making demos...

Nowadays scene has become "let anyone create, no matter the skills, everyone creating anything is a hero".

Writing some glsl or noodling together some nodes is not coding. You don't care - fine. But for me the line is drawn once we also don't care about pulling of technical feats anymore.

i guess i dont see much of a line of technical achievement between a demo made in one of the tools referenced in this thread, and a 4k made with an off the shelf example framework, an off the shelf synth (complete with VST/UI and supporting tooling), compressed with an off the shelf compressor, and visually consisting of a shader made in and exported from shadertoy with a bunch of code borrowed from other shadertoy shaders and sdf helper libraries, and compressed with an off the shelf shader minimiser. "wow, 4k, how is this possible??"

But as it stands I have the feeling we just are seeing some designers playing around with tools and maybe writing the odd shader here and there.

apart from a very small number of examples the (pc) scene hasn't produced many actually technically impressive / technically innovative works for years, you could even say decades. we've already changed the technical level from "things that are impressive achievements for the world of computing" to "things that are enjoyable pieces of work for a small hobbyist community". the emperor is already clearly naked. design (or lack thereof) and quality of execution has been the key factor for a long time now. and yet, here we are.

Hold it right there partner, I remember you losing Revision 2023 PC to me as matter of FACT!

That said, I'm going to toss this in here: Notch is absolutely awesome and in a world where we can use third party software/engines, LLMs and what not, Notch is something visually and technically impressive people should be GLAD it is available. And if you have to pay for your toys well was that ever any different? If you look at Smash with wry smile and you have a demo that makes Notch look good, well, do I have to f*cking spell it out?

I'm hoping for more creativity and more years of great demos to come from all y'all. I'll try to do one again in a year or what have you but I know who I am and I own that. So keep your eyes peeled.

Notch on! And if Unity is your thing, look at what Jugi has been doing with it for such a long time now. As if that isn't amazing, never heard anyone moan about that. Or they did and I just didn't read it or decided not to.

Some sceners in their design world see engines as tools to help them bring their creative ideas to life, not as the main focus to achieve a technical coder competition. I’m fine with that approach, especially if it doesn’t really improve the quality of their work. Most of us are very experienced. We do not have to prove that we can create a demo from scratch. You see that most of the veteran coders created their own engines to make their life easier. We are not in the demo making world 0.9 but more like a 8.3 where we don't need to proof everything always.
