On using tools like Notch for making demos...

NO, U!!!
Great discussion so far everyone - keep it going!!
And as a developer of Notch I say: with the recent 2026.2 release it has become more creative coder visualist friendly through the handful of new custom shader nodes. With those, you can make, for example, your own custom particle force affectors, cloner effectors or geometry defirmers. I am also personally really happy of that development in a tool like Notch. Enables you to make something not possible with the stock nodes, and to express yourself as a developer without having to write the whole engine or timeline & keyframing tools yourself. Go check it out through the trial and tutorials, all free :). And judge yourself how easy it is to make stuff and or demos with a tool like Notch.

thanks for the commercial.
This was very informative
Eagerly awaiting the nano banana compo next year!
Erm not meant as a commercial, but anyhow. As demoscener, I do what I want. And what that is, is to try to enable people to make good demos!!!
Use whatever tooling or your own code as you will. Most importantly, make demos!!

I cheerfully disagree with this elitist sentiment. My first proper demos were made with the Rose engine. It provided me with an entry point to learn what it takes to actually make something from start to finish. It really is a blessing that people share their tools, knowledge and creativity in the modern age of the demoscene and serves to bring in new people into the niche within a niche we all operate in.

This.
Say what you will about Notch, but it has made breakdancing under a piece of cloth in the ballbin while being showered by sticky goo a common thing.
Sir, the Småland is for children only.

Calm down grandpa, have you taken your heart medicine?

lets say that given the wide variance in quality of demos made in notch, or indeed cables or werkzeug etc, it just goes to prove how much of making demos is not about the engine at all :)
tbf i feel like smash won this thread before most of it happened.

I remember giving it shit for having hardware based DRM (USB Senselock dongles with ring0 DRM), but then realised shit like PACE iLOK and back in the day Cubase had Syncrosoft level shit.
And now its even more a given and now acceptable in commercial settings, given that Notch is now basically commercial animation software. And things like CelAction2D also have strong enough DRM, too.
Nvm.
HW dongles are still waaaay better than subscriptions.
Having code from commercial tools in demos feels like a step back (no matter if those tools have demoscene roots).

what about tab completion?
I'm always for healthy doses of whataboutism, but when you think you've seen it all, cometh AI haters defending demomakers :)
