Thanks for asking that. It really does give pause as to the motivations of why we do demos in the first place.

More camp demos perhaps? Make a demo about it? I know certainly you have in the past! :D

I'm asking myself exactly this for a longer while (20 years or so). For me personally, the motivation is very low.

Maybe it makes more sense for people who want to learn coding and computer graphics, so making a small demo/intro is nice a challenge and a chance to show off the result for whatever reason (boost their portfolio, make friends etc..).

That is, as long, as one knows when to move on without getting dragged into a "toxic community" spiral on pouet etc... ;)

With demos like this, this, and, well, half of Jumalauta's releases, I think the demoscene has "camp" well-covered.

Make a sports art demo about it.

On a slightly more serious note: I think many of us make demos for the simple fact that we just like making these weird little mostly useless things with our computers, and then show them to others who like watching these weird little mostly useless things. Sometimes there are prizes.

Who cares about prizes? DOMINANCE ASSERTION is the prize in itself! Results.txt does not lie.

and if the dominance assertion can be realized with art and routines made by oneself, the dominance feels even better

You nailed it! This is exactly what it was all about. There were many ways to achieve it - ridiculously small size, unbelievable number of polygons or even "kick ass" music, incredibly detailed pixel art, you name it. But all those things were just means to the end, which was world domination! Unfortunately, society has changed. Now it's all about self-expression with a touch of semi-political message to assert artistic and moral dominance.

I know you were joking. But that's the modus operandi of the right. These jokes that reveal underlying way of thinking. And you were (partly) right. It WAS about domination. Not world domination as you jokingly wrote but teenage male domination. And we all can pretend otherwise, but in most cases that's what it was in the beginning. Teenage boys "owning" one another. Oftentimes boys who were denied that dominating feeling on the playground.

And don't get me wrong, I don't try to put labels/accusations. I don't try to insult you when I say you have a pretty fascist framework in which your mind operates. I genuinely think that's the case. I am pretty sure people have different goals within the scene and in general end up playing with groups they have aligned goals with. This is what makes "the scene" so interesting in itself.
