The Demoscene might not be about limitations anymore

Sounds fun. Competition when & where?

Stock A1200 sounds like a fantasy console. :D I haven't seen an unexpanded A1200 in active use for decades. But people are free to write demos for whatever they feel like, of course.

I'd wish A1200+FASTMEM (2+2MB should be enough ;D ) prods more than 060 - though they're usually very nice too.

A1200 + fastmem is just an arbitrary point on the slippery slope that led to 060 (where it then ended abruptly, for reasons beyond our control).

Vanilla A1200 is the name of the game. That's a challenge.

Well, I just think a bit fastmem would be good for A1200 because of reasons you know, but yeah, vanilla works for me too, very nicely.

Bad takes Photon, are you living under a rock? You remind me of Lars Ulrich sometimes - the more I read the more I’m reminded of hot garbage

Says the man who had to disable the accelerator in the compo machine to record my demo for Evoke last year. ;)

Revision 2027 Amiga Demo compo?

Photon, are you in as well? :)

I'd love to see more releases for vanilla A1200.

Although I confess I have some fastmem in mine, which makes it an excellent workstation for Amos and DPaint.

This is real demoscene.

There's a reason many of us for both scope and challenge moved back to older platforms. Not me, I keep relentlessly punching upwards and coming in 'second', but hey that's the point.

Yeah, this is precisely my point. Outside of recording your entry for a compo, I don't use the A1200 in its "stock" form... I had to actively change the config to get your stuff running. Which was of course totally okay for Evoke, because the Alternative Platforms compo is basically "Wild".

Revision on the other hand... So far, I tried to be _really_ adamant that entries must run on one of the compo the machines as-is (meaning, A500 + 512K slow, or A1200/060), and preferably w/o much "waving a dead chicken over it". I occasionally made an exception, because of <3, but if people are showing up in droves asking me to pull the system to bits to get their entry running, I'll be far less amused.

And yes Blueberry, I also understand the technical reason for the political push - even disregarding RTG and a full Workbench running, it's hard to get no CPU stuff running with the '060 and its the entire VBR/MMU setup, start-of-the-address-space remapping, and whatever in the way, and even harder to make a clean exit back to the system afterwards, if it is even possible. So lets just shortcut all this hassle, and call it a "stock A1200" entry, right? :)

But to put it another way - if people _really_ want stock A1200 stuff in the compo, and in numbers, I won't be blocking it. The compo is about what you want as Amiga scene, and not what I want, after all, even if my opinion should be very clear from what I wrote above - but we need to formalize it somehow in the rules, and please don't do the usual "oh well, we're gonna pull a stunt, Charlie will make it work somehow", thanks.

Should be an interesting challenge for all the 060 lovers but also a tempting upgrade for the OCS gang.
Spread the word!

To be fair, I would be even more interested in doing a 64k for a vanilla-A1200, as I've already made a couple of demos for the machine :)

Seems like this is happening, so lets just put this out there: stock A1200 entries, at least ones that refuse to run with an accelerator, will have to run from a floppy disk, and they MUST be able to boot from (if the entry is bootable), and run from any floppy drive - DF1 too in particular. I hope no one objects to at least this requirement...

Does it have to be about limitations tho? Whatever happened to people making what they want?

I never knew there was such a thing as the Demoscene Police.

The more, the merrier! ;)

This constrains the design space somewhat, but given the ample time, this limitation could just be viewed as an additional creative conduit. :)

I think it's not called "Police" and "Law", but "orgas" and "compo rules" respectively.

And those rules are being adapted over time.

More like "angry old men" and "conservative taste".
