IMHO "not at all" is the decision resulting in the best possible prod.

visit a demoparty, watch the compos, make some friends, have a drink at the campfire, learn a platform, master a craft or art, make a prod, win a compo, join a group, in no particular order

Visiting a demoparty can be difficult depending on where you live on earth...if you are in Europe it should not be that hard tho.
I would advise to get to know what's the demoscene is about before going to a demoaprty. Watch a LOT of demos on Youtube, download them, and then of course try to get to understand how they are made !
Going to a demoparty is always fun but going to a demoparty with a prod ready to be released is IMO much more fun !
Try to make something you like and enjoy making

Doesn't work. To realistically get votes you have to put your own ambitions aside and cater to your audience. Thats at least if you care about "competing" because often what you want to do, and what the audience wants to see and have are two entirely different things.
