most of the ground work is done, so i'm starting to diverge into features that i've wanted myself. first is testing a recycle-style slicer in the sample editor:

BB Image

(not available in public yet, should be later this week)
other things i want to diverge from the og on:
- stereo samples
- realtime reso filters both as an effect and an envelope
- saturation/distortion effect
- swing slider somewhere..

if you've got any other cool ideas let me know. i won't do everything but open for ideas
oh i forgot to mention you can now right-click drag envelopes to make or squeeze space to the right of the point you're moving, so you don't have to move each point separately. what a fucking huge time saver omg

I'm craving for an alternative, modern envelope mode. That expands the original ones with

- Interpolation
- lin/log/exp attack, decay and release

And fake DAC options. Think Yamaha DX7 (9, 12bit) :)

Might as well change the name to Vsttracker at this point if you start adding features.

or FT2+ :D
I just found this plugin this weekend and have been playing with it.
I really like it.

Just a pointer.

We've seen so many FastTracker II clones throughout the years and many are now forgotten.
What was a common feature were changes to the UI, changes to the fileformat, changes to many things. For a while I feared that the XM fileformat would be as fragmented as the MOD fileformat.

This is why 8bitbubsy's clone has been such a success: It's a FastTracker II clone aiming to be 100% compatible with the original.

So... If you go down the road of extending your tracker plugin (which could be an interesting idea) please don't spoil the XM fileformat. I don't want to relive hosting a tracking compo where people submit XM files with 27 channels, or stereo samples and claim they're made in FastTracker II.

If you make extensions, put them in a new fileformat of your creation, and make it clear to the user which functions are not XM compatible.

Again, awesome work. I'm looking forward to see future versions.

(Also, the slicer thing above. What does it do that 9xx can't do?)

@rp good call about the lin/log curves, I'll probably add a kb modifier for doing that. What do you mean by interpolation exactly? There already is resampling + bit depth conversion in my local version (hopefully soon on github), but DAC emulation is not something I'm super interested in- just stick RX950 or something after it :)

@psychad Yes, I am keeping the format compatibility with XM. The diverging format features are opt-in in the config, and usage of them marks the song as using the new format, with a new .xm2 file extension if saved. It can also be converted to a regular XM if needed, losing the new stuff of course. But the fact that it can even load old modules is a bonus that I don't really use myself that much- I use it to make new tracks and that's the whole point of this plugin to me- to bring the sequencing into DAW environments with easier integration. I'm not one for a lot of nostalgia, this is an effort in pragmatism.

The slicer does what Recycle does! Finds transients with the most energy and creates slice points, then you can chop them off to different sample or instrument slots; here's the new UI showing stereo samples as well with the slicer submenu:

People who think this stuff is heresy should use bubsy's version- I don't really care for negative sideline loafing as I have nothing to sell here and am actively diverting donations elsewhere- primarily bubsy. Should his version also be called something else because it also is not 1:1 with the DOS version? :) I do like FT2+ though!
Your idea sounds good to me.
You thought about the conversion back and forth. Excellent.
.xm2 - why not? Go for it!

Concerning loading old songs:
I like to load my own old songs and remix them further by adding extra VSTs.
I've been looking for a plugin like this for a while.
So I'm actually quite thrilled being able to take existing MOD or XM files and use Ableton Live almost like a DJ program.

So even if you personally don't use the feature of loading old songs, it is highly appreciated!

Thank you for explaining the slicer, I will try it out!

Yes I am very cognizant of keeping the original format separate as I don't want to fracture the support for that- it actually is much easier to gate the new features behind the config and new format, than break the existing format. Thanks for the nice words :)

I hope to update this new stuff early next week- it'll be tagged 1.1.0. First up is the stereo sample support, plus support for other bit depths than 8 and 16 (eg. 24 and 32f), and higher samplerates with proper resampling, along with the slicer. Biggest dilemma with the filters right now is how to fit it in the instrument editor UI as it's already quite packed tight, and I don't want to make it *that* different, so if I don't figure it out for 1.1.0 it'll be a bit later.
VaSTtracker! :)

ok the first cut of xm2 is in- note you need to enable it in config first to see this stuff.

exp/log envelopes! there's also an env length param, 1 is normal length, 2 is double, etc. it goes up to 16 so you can do eeeeextra long envs! to make things curvy, simply click-drag up or down on a line segment. both xm2 and non-xm2 modes also can use shift-click to add a point on the line at the mouse cursor, or alt/cmd-click to remove one.

BB Image

when loading stereo samples there's a new dialog:

BB Image

sample editor has format and channel conversion dialogs:

BB Image

resampler in s.e.ext is a proper resampler/bitcrusher:

BB Image

you can have up to 96 samples per instrument:

oh yeah and there should be proper support for 24bit/32bit samples along with higher samplerates, and in xm2 mode they are stored with the sample, so finetune isn't "lost"- C-4 will always point at the sample's correct samplerate. there's also a bunch of other smaller things, look at the changelog if you're curious.
