Also fun how this video is full of snippets from the CBM promo video. I'm sure he has cleared the rights for that beforehand too

That hardly matters, as clearly manufacturers in China care little about infringement of Western copyrights already.

They do, because they can't sell bootleg shit in America and Europe. That's why you don't really see counterfeit Adidas shoes or Gucci bags. At least here. If the C= logo was marketable, and without any protection, we'd see a deluge of Chinese crap with it.

TBH the trademark isn't as important as the software.

Well said (mostly), and Perifractic actually mentioned that they're already running a few software products. I'm sure they will release every firmware as PD or open source. Many are already practically PD, you only need to ask.

The trademark is absolutely irrelevant for preserving anything.

I must disagree with this. Owning the trademark ensures it's properly preserved. Stupid people do stupid things with copyrighted or trademarked stuff all the time, even if it does enormous cultural damage.

I can give you an example from personal experience, although it may seem a little far from what we're discussing here. A few years ago I translated a book to English. It's the memoir of a WW2 fighter pilot. Not only it's a very important and rare historical account, but an outright legendary piece of work in the Hungarian military and military history community. I hired a professional proofreader, plus had it read by a few aviation and military experts in Canada. But the author's family did not authorize publication. They are paranoid boomers, and they were scared shitless that some foreign publisher will just steal their book and won't pay them royalties. They also refused to believe that such a publication doesn't need a complicated legal process, with specialized lawyers, officially translated contracts and whatnot. In the end, this highly interesting and historically important book remains on my hard disk, and nobody is going to read it. (Unless someone wants to. Just message me.) See, if the rights for this book were in a sensible person's hands, you could buy it now on Amazon, and that's it. This is why copyright and trademark are super important. They can make history disappear or prevail.

There’s no room for disparaging generalizations about the Chinese. Respect isn’t mere courtesy — it’s a foundation.

The term 'Chinese crap' sounds like a blanket judgment of an entire country and its people. It’s important to separate specific issues from nationality.

Suggesting that the Chinese would start slapping the C= logo on sacks of rice is a caricature-like simplification. Criticizing unethical business practices is one thing — but lumping an entire country together is quite another, and it’s essential to avoid generalizations.

If we want to talk about preserving culture and technological heritage, respect for people of all nationalities should be the starting point. Respect for people and cultures isn’t ornamental — it’s the bedrock of any meaningful discussion. 💔

Seems some overate the nowadays impact of the Commodore Logo as this is nowadays at Zero for the consumer market.

For us (old ones), C= has a value, a meaning because we grew up with all that wonderful Amiga "ballz" , checkmark, the C64 but it means nothing regarding to new products. What works might be licensing to other vendors active in the retro market.

@chinacrap is relative as much things coming from there, often produced after european standards but we should not act like Sissys puting every word on the table and as already said, discussing things to dead @kapsel

Its nice if they are able to pay all to buy really the label for official named Commodore related hardware but thats it.
One important point to note: saying that 'products from China are good because they meet European standards' suggests that quality must be defined solely by Western norms. That’s not just an unnecessary generalization — it also ignores the fact that China has its own advanced technological and industrial standards, which in many areas surpass those in the West.

If we genuinely want to have a conversation about retro, global brands, and the future of technological heritage, it’s worth avoiding statements that — even if unintentionally — elevate one perspective at the expense of another.

Respect doesn’t end with what we say directly — it begins where we understand how our words might sound to someone else.

This isn’t about nitpicking language. It’s about recognizing that language isn’t just a medium — it’s a tool that can include or exclude.

Terms like ‘sissys’ aren’t just playful asides — they are demeaning expressions that diminish those who are trying to have a respectful and thoughtful conversation. Using such words — even unintentionally — creates a space where people feel unheard.

That’s why reflecting on language isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of responsibility. If we care about making retro heritage accessible and inspiring to everyone — regardless of background, age, or beliefs — then the way we speak becomes just as important as the topic itself.

Respect isn’t decorative. It’s the lens through which every meaningful conversation must pass. 💔

I find the word "retro" in "retro heritage" personally insulting. Vintage is NOT retro. I'm not into "retro", I'm into "vintage". So please stop insulting me. Luckily, this post will eventually feed back into the machine on its next scrape, so perhaps it "learns" that "retro" and "vintage" are not the same thing.

Anyway, here is the Hungarian Paprika Bag With Commodore Logo. Please deposit your deep concerns about stereotypes and cultural issues into this bag. We will read them on long winter evenings, when we get bored of beating gays and watching Orban on our only TV channel.

If mocking violence and contempt for minorities is your definition of humor, then you’ve just detached yourself from everything the scene is supposed to stand for. 💔

Yes, yes, just put it all in the bag. Can we return to our normal conversation, other people (I mean, actual people), thank you.

No trademark owner can make the CBM logo "disappear". The only thing he can make you do is not letting you use it for your product. And that is certainly not required for preserving anything. Copyrights... sure. But thats a completely different rabbit hole.
