Revision 2025 - Grow Beyond - April 18th to 21st 2025

category: parties [glöplog]
ffs this thread is not about TomCat. All has said.
Do your own Thread...making this thread about him is a total lack of respect to the organizers.

So stop this shit.

Also stop posting links to defamatory articles which were subject to a slander lawsuit many years ago. Particularly if you only dare to post them with a brand new anonymous account.

On the other hand:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer

If someone has questions to me, I am happy to answer somewhere else. Ranting here anonymously and playing victim after you had 4 days to talk to me is simply petty.

@sensenstahl

may you please remind one user, this main-topic is Revision 2025 and not him (himself).

Thank you!

+1 for banning all AI generated content in compos, esp. when used for soundtracks.
-1 for banning all AI generated content. Or to be more precise, we first have to define, what »AI generated« means. If you just take 10 words as a prompt and you get a final image, then okay. But there will be more and more tools that use AI (like Adobe) and then there's the question where to draw the line. And AI can be a great source for inspiration of course. Like illustrators who use Google Images or other input like movies/posters for decades and »copy« from it or get inspired.

As a sofascener I'd like to thank organizers for fluent stream-experience. And of course all the people creating stunning entries, gigs, seminars and whatnot.

But as an old(ish!) person I have to admit I also found it hard to stay awake for the last compos. Lynn's set (with very nice video work and shaders btw) before the last compo-block gave just enough extra energy to watch through the intro-compos, but then I just had to give up and go sleeping, estimating the duration of the demo-compos.

Also +1 for AI-ban.

Thank you for the "sofascener" <3 (add to vocabulary...)

This has been one of the smoothest executions of Revision in my memory and it has been a delight to work with this awesome team.

And thanks go to all our visitors, on-site, satellite and remote, for their releases and spirit - you are the ones who bring the atmosphere to the party and what keeps us going for 15 years now.

When we started, I had already many friends in the scene, but Revision extended that family manyfold and I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know so many of you. I might not always have the time for deep talks but I enjoy seeing all of you enjoying yourselves. May our paths cross again at one of the many parties ahead.

As a very very new family member... I am very happy to be part of it! *hugs!*

To add some honest postitivity into the mix: This was an amazing party! My first Revision (and first demoparty overall), definitely not my last. (Didn't vibe with every prod, but that's fine)

I forgot to mention the obvious: it was an awesome party. The only thing that would have made it even more perfect would have been Pandur not being on sick leave. It would have been great to have another VJ battle during Lugoober’s and Messi’s set.

I especially loved the MBR gig, even though that’s way out of my usual cup of tea.

Hello,

Thank you again for this great edition of Revision. I'll leave some feedback in random order:

- As a visitor, it's always hard to know how things are going behind the scenes (ever been an organiser to what felt like a dumpster fire, only to have visitors tell you everything was awesome and flawless?). But since the orgas I met looked more relaxed than usual, it seems things went nicely this year and that's great if confirmed.
- When we arrived, we soon heard a rumour that there was a pizza stand with good pizzas. And they were very tasty indeed. It might not seem like much, but it greatly contributes to the experience. Not that long ago, I remember it was important for us to shop for groceries on Saturday, because otherwise we'd be stuck with no good food option for the rest of the weekend. But this weekend, after having tried the pizza, we were relieved to not have that pressure anymore.
- The 64k meetup was great, a lot of people showed up and it was nice to see everyone. Thanks to the kitchen team for letting us use the equipment!
- The intro making seminar was great, and another opportunity to meet subsets of the community.
- The quality of the photo booth seemed lower than previous years, in particular the lighting.
- Not specific to this year, but I think the wristbands that have been used (since 2024?) are great. They make nice memorabilia. Please don't change it.
- With one notable exception, the schedule seemed to be more on time than usual, which was very nice.
- The quality of the compos in general was great, especially in the size coding categories. The PC demo compo felt more even that usual, with a lot of very good entries, but no obvious compo winner.
- I noticed I had trouble with Wi-Fi from the front rows, which means I often skipped live voting.
- We also noticed that while on the website the live voting only shows the text info of the prod, in the application it shows the thumbnail. That design decision is a bit unfortunate as it can have a spoiler effect in some cases.
- I didn't understand anything about the prod infos on the slides. It felt like there was some arbitrary distinction between what is disclosed and what isn't. For example, it makes no sense to me to have "uses XYZ" when it also says "XYZ author is in the group". Same goes for the use of AI tools, as I think the spectrum of uses is too wide to be put all on the same level. In general it feels this requires more thought.
- Speaking of which, compos could use less genAI. Crappy generated images just spoiled the quality of some compos for me, and made me suspicious when I later learned some prods I thought were genuine were in fact genAI.
- Finally, the late compos are still a problem. I don't have a solution, but some things come to mind, both for orgas and participants. For one thing, compos could use fewer private joke prods. Some of them are getting really old, irritating, or worse. I'd also rather see a good invitation for your party than a dozen bad ones. And for the compo team side, I just don't understand why there is preselection in some compos, but not in others.

Quoting havoc:
Quote:
But fact remains that half of the hall emptying out before the most prestigious compo starts is a bloody shame. Please do something about it.

I'll add that I think the vote count in the PC demo compo section of the results speaks for itself.

Anyway, I surely forgot many things, but that's what's on top of my mind at the moment.
Thank you again, Revision was great, have a well deserved rest, see you next year.

Damn, how did I forget to mention the MBR gig?! It was absolutely awesome. Immediate magic between the group and the public. Loved it.

Loved the shader jam too.

@gaspode: I changed my mind after Uncle pointed out that the other T3 demo used an AI-generated soundtrack. It would have been one of my favorite releases, but that really ruined it for me. It’s such a shame because it feels like a missed opportunity.

I mean, I would argue that if we consider allowing AI-generated soundtracks, we should also change the rules so it becomes acceptable to reuse soundtracks released in previous music compos (of course, after asking the creator for permission). This would give new creators the opportunity to release something—or even start a collaboration (and sometimes a new friendship).

Big luv to the whole team who made the party such an enjoyable experience to witness over the years; everything - the gigs, the entries and the general vibe are what makes the scene hold a very special place in my heart.

The best things this year (as an old fart, especially when you take into account mileage as well as the age of the vehicle *grin*) have been seeing numerous incredibly talented newcomers appear and contribute fab works to the scene as well as (forgive me for the term but it fits) old heads coming back and releasing new works: >this< is what keeps the scene alive, it is as the bangles sang, an eternal flame ;)

IMHO the scene is still absolutely about making the best things, sometimes fighting against unbelievable odds (check out that NES mapper 0 demo ffs) and making things work >together< and I’m not just talking about productions either.

Teamwork, solidarity and support have always pushed things forward in our scene, even if how we push each other has changed over time… matured, if you will *grin* - we’ve merely moved from baptisms of fire to softer forms of encouragement, it’s not >that< different really is it? hehe.

As some might know my health’s been right through the meatgrinder over the last few years so sadly I’ve not been able to make it to many overseas parties or even enter as much stuff as I’d have loved to (I’m not counting my continual banging out of ascii’s which rely on muscle memory more than anything hehe), so it's super appreciated that folks put the effort into streaming (thank you CCC/revision streaming team, those camera angles were just amazing this year omg) and supporting sofascening in general, and it’s always nice to try and contribute something even if it's just a reversible ANSI ape :D

Honestly, it's heartening to see just how much active stuff is being pumped out by so many talented and awesome people :) and I can always rely on having my mind blown at least a "couple" of times whilst watching from afar (8kb dune, wtaf?! Extremely cool animation remade in 64kb - lol omfg) so thank you!

TL;DR just listen to this <3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj2eSe5pcm8

:)

thanks a lot for the wonderful party everyone, especially thanks to all the orgas, have been enjoying it a lot, it was a blast, and i love how each year we see new sceners taking part, it's definitely becoming (quote docd) more inclusive, more colourful and diverse and all of this sparks even more creativity.

+1 for ai ban

The results.txt at scene.org: Do you really use "OEM 852" charset in Central Europe? With it, the txt file was readable in Notepad++. Nothing opens it correctly without changing the charset.

This was my 2nd Revision, and the best one yet :)

I'd like to thank:

1: Reality and Enfys for helping our table with power on the first day, cheers!
2:The infodesk people for:
a: putting up with my appaling attempt at ordering beer in German
b: whoever was looking after the coffee machines - they helped so much :)
3: The 5k organisers - I hate running, and it runins my ankle for the rest of the party, but its still somehow fun
4: everyone that voted for my ANSI :D I was so close to top three, I'll try better next year
5: The 'pinball team' - I just love pinball

Highlights:
4th place in Textmode, my best placing yet :)
the MBR set, mental!
pizza!
actually meeting people

Lows:

can't really think of any!
the only super minor thing was someone had some sort of disco ball thing somewhere that was rotating over the big screen during the compos, would have been nice to turn it off or angle it a bit differently.

+1 for ai ban, again, it'd really lighten the compos and allow us to go to bed earlier.
Thank you Revision orga for organizing this wonderful party! :) It was really fun to hang out at the bonfire and watch compos with friends again. I still had some issues with it, though:

1. The price of attendance - I'm not sure what can be done about this, but the reality of the matter is that the more the price increases, the more people can't afford attending, somewhat excluding them from the scene. I mean, 115€ was pretty much the price of a supporter ticket not that long ago o_O

2. The AI generated nonsense flooding many compos - It really sucks that a substantial part of the PC and Amiga demo compos were fundamentally not made by the people who submitted them, but by the work-stealing exploitation machines that are GenAI image and audio generators. I think this is a cultural problem that mandatory disclosure of AI usage on partymeister can't fix, an outright ban on GenAI would probably help clarify the stance on this issue though. (so yes, +1 for AI ban)

3. The Entropretty sponsorship - This is probably at odds with the pricing problem, but do we really want a vaguely blockchain-related startup funded by the web3 foundation to sponsor Revision? We know those types of people don't appreciate art as a fundamentally cultural good but only as an asset to extract monetary value from. Also, the guy couldn't even coherently explain his own product to me when I asked (probably because it's nonsense)

All in all, great party, I'll definitely attend again, even more happily so if those issues are addressed. :)

as a sofa-enjoyer this year, i mentioned out loud several times that the production values of just the stream are just next level. i can only imagine what it was like being there!
Really enjoyed the stream as sofa-scener! Thank you for that :-)

+1 for AI ban too

Regarding what can make Revision a better or even more interesting experience I wanna point out to the very interesting Seminar from Shana this year.

There are lots of ideas for the scene and in my opinion also directly about Revision how it can evolve, while still being attractive to the folks who wanna keep it the same forever ;-) Link here.
