Idea for music preselection
category: general [glöplog]
1 - soon after the deadline musics are converted to mp3
2 - people can listen to them and VOTE! (Being encouraged to do so by vocal anouncements and big screen recurrent slide.)
3 - A ~1h30 compo is set up with the best vote already obtained
4 - after the compo nothing changes. People stil can listen and vote for the entire list.
One could say : "The guy who has many friends will always be selected."
Which can be answered :
1 - A guy who has many friends can't be totally bad.
2 - At a same (or slightly lower) quality level, it is and has always been, the one with the biggest amount of friends who wins.
3 - Do you like horses?
The only thing it that partymeister or clones should allow to DL the musics both in native and mp3/ogg format.

lets try this : some perfect entry by unknown author could be prerated lower than lot of mediocre tunes made by guys with hallload of friends -> so it doesnt make it into the compo -> low chances to win ( i'd say almost no chance )
In this case, audience would listen to pieces of music they would have already heard a couple of hours ago : it would kill the surprise effect.
And, after all, why not voting directly from the listening of the given MP3, in this case ?

I don't think so.
The show only remains as an event to entertain the people inside the hall.
I guess most of people who vote would listen the tunes via the voting system before voting, if it's well done.
After the compo, the orga should also remind "Don't be a sheep nor follow the masses. Listen to the other tunes and make your own opinion..."

i love the idea!
the problem is that no one wants to listen/judge to 30+ tracks during a party... and i dont blame them.
so it'll boil down to a biased popularity contest. which sucks.

music preselection rules anyway.
music compos should be settled with a fistfuck fight.
yeh, first one who starts bleeding from their anus wins. :)
i wouldn't vote, wait.. i don't vote anyways :)
hmm dunno if any other than jury preselection would work. people are so lazy on voting nowadays, especially on music competitions. it's good like this.
I've always voted for music competitions, did so at Breakpoint (with the exception of streaming music, because I was finishing my demo) and will do again in the future.
And, because I don't own a laptop and therefore usually visit demoparties without a computer, I could never vote if the tracks weren't played on the party sound system. And I wouldn't want to ask someone to lend me his computer for two hours so that I could listen to the music..

I guess it would be faster than you think. How many musics you just need to listen for about 15 seconds to know it sucks!

Music preselection has always sucked for musicians.
And I did preselect for the parties I was orga at and I know how hard and unfair it always is.
At the Saturne party III or V, they managed to do a preselection by groups of 4 volunteers randomly dispatched who preselected each a buch of songs excluding the ones they did.
It was indeed a big step forward, but I guess a lot of work for a compo that barely nobody cares about except musicians...
Preselection is neccessary. And the way it is done yet is ok. Being preselected always hurts. Can tell that cause I got preselected from Mekka 98 to Mekka 2001
always. Just keep on trying.
A good thing I think is ,that preselected entries can´t be voted for and won´t be spread! THat gives the authors the chance to submit their entry at another party. (done so at breakpoint)
Surprisingly my preselected mp3 at TUM03 won the compo (because of the musicstreams they had there where all entries had been played whether preselected or not and they had all been voteable).
For a short moment I was happy but then again it sucked because people might think I cheated (I didn´t I swear) and I didn´t have had the chance to HEAR my tune with the big fat sound system. And for only that reason I made the song!
So preselected entries shouldn´t be voteable and not be spread!

i second skyrunner about spreading.
would be nice if for non preselected works (not just music) an option would be given wether to release it at that party or not.
effort is put in any serious work and giving the chance to present it elsewere is fair imho.
about music only, well someone will be unhappy anyway i guess... with 50 submitted prods you don't have many solutions, and organizers do their best

Skyrunner: "Preselected" means that it PASSED the preselection.
for fucks sake, there are way too many music compo entries without the musicians taking them from one party to another.
@wayfinder: äh....yes...erm...surely you know what I mean. I just used "preselected" in a wrong way. In my post with "preselected" I meant "tunes which didn´t pass the presec" off course.
Music compos suck, there is no chance ppl can make me stay indoors at breakpoint for that amount of time not giving me visual feedback or making it possible for me to chat with my friends.
Maybe if the songs wouldn't been played at MAX+1 volume we could sit and have a lounge and discuss the music, I'm not wanna be forced to listen to it and stfu during that time.
Maybe you COULD speak to eachother at bp, I never bothered to listen to it. I never vote for music either. Musicians will hate me

How about making a public-voting system? Bring the soundsystem to the meadow outside the party place. Allow people to sit on the grass, have a beer, talk, dance, whatever. After each tune some kind of voting takes place, like waving a green card saying "i like this tune" or waving a red card saying "this tune is crap". The voting will be unfair, but atleast it would allow us (lazy bastards who don't vote because we're outside boozing) to vote at the compos.
Perhaps this should be a special compo?
Perhaps this should be a special compo?
At least some of you aknowledge that this compo is particular and should be hold in a different way than other compos.
You may not agree with my proposal so please sublit a concept.
I still think it's not a good idea to associate the musical show - which by definition can't be too long without becoming sooo boring and keeps people away from boozing quietly on the grass - and the vote.
The preliminary vote I suggested, may be reserved to "specialists" (say musicians for music, graphicians for gfx) and may draft the final rank. Then, other people vote to finetune the 10 or 15 first places already voted by "specialists"...

"specialist" should be volunteers and volunteers from a particular group should not be more than, say 10% of the total amount of volunteers.
Sceners are honnest.

"3 - Do you like horses?"
ROFLMAO !!!!

...you mean, like some kind of... pre-selection? By a competent jury? Why, that could just be the solution...
hahahaha! classic! 'maybe we should ditch the preselection thing and just let a competent jury select entries before the compo!'
:D
