Screen captures of demos for handhelds

category: general [glöplog]

Hi,

For the Nintendo DS, making proper demo captures is rather annoying: you can't do it with just the stock hardware (no rendertargets or anything, unlike with the 3DS), emulator captures aren't always 100% accurate, and the last resort option (pointing a camera at the screen) also has its own obvious set of issues.

Specialized capture devices exist for the DS, but they're expensive, hard to find, getting old, and so on (and they don't even exist for the DSi at all).

So I was starting to think about making my own capture card. Though, this could probably be made useful to more people by making it more generic and have it work with other handhelds etc. as well (as opposed to having separate ones for all of these platforms).

Hence, does anyone else have handheld/LCD-based platforms that would be helped with having a capture card be available?

The VTech Mobigo, but there is no plans for having a demo running on it for the next few years. And it may not be so hard to wire in a TV out of some sort to it.

What is the drsplay interface on the DS? If it's a parallel LCD interface, isn't it possible to feed that into an HDMI encoder and get DVI out of it?
The DS has two screens, which makes it a bit more annoying (having two HDMI signals or USB interfaces, one for each screen, feels kinda annoying). And maybe some other platforms will use MIPI DSI or something SPI-based or something. So I'm going to defer the choice of chipset for a bit to see what I'll be ending up with.
