Dogma demomaking

category: general [glöplog]
Lol, looks like v3nom just wants to make artistic videos. If you are so concerned, there is really no point restricting your artistic freedom to limitations of real-time graphics, no matter how powerful (or not) hardware is. Vimeo is your friend ;P

What I posted is what a classical artist wrote about dogmas and art and why dogmas don't make sense in their view / in the view of classical art

But they have a point in my opinion.

Of course also the text itself should not be interpreted in a dogmatic way.
Saying "no dogmas allowed" is a dogma as well after all.
Still it's always interesting to get a different opinion. In the end there's only art for arts' sake and this can take whatever form the artist deemed to be suitable.

but as we all learned by now the demoscene is not about creating art but to show off your skills (and if youre lucky get a good job).

or talking about dogmas on pouet
I find it interesting how so many discussions, no matter the subject, sooner or later come to involve “what is art?” question.

I'm often surprised how little art we're discussing on this self-proclaimed computer art scene.

My impression is that the average scener can’t distinguish between art and fart. And couldn’t care less for that matter. Could be I’m totally wrong.

luckily there are dogmas to stare blind on
A "classical artist" (whatever that may be) would run as fast as they can... we must be on to something.

not really, you're confusing artist with athlete
If you do a demo on a PC, you're doing a PC demo - no matter if it targets TIC-80, x86_64, a GPU or WinUAE. Oldschoolers should be aware of that. They are demonstrating their skills in handling a PC, its operating systems, tools, and a small specialized subset of programming interfaces. The only way to resist this usurpation is to take the PC out of the equation - that is dogma.

Code your PC demos on Amiga to achieve DOGMA LEVEL 7.

Wha? The target is what sets the category. If you grow potatoes, you grow potatoes, you don’t merely “operate a tractor”. This dogma thingy is an interesting concept, but there’s no need to go full fundamentalist. Plus you can’t know what the exact use case scenario is for each and every case in which a PC is used. For example, I use PC for production of C64 artifacts because I can’t be assed to write text in 40 columns or wait for slow saves. I don’t use macros or any sort of readymade code libraries and I don’t code little python scripts to produce speedcode etc. Write asm, compile, send to hardware / CRT. All I care is that it looks right on hardware hooked to a CRT, couldn’t care less what it looks like in an emulator or bitmap preview. Is this a Dogma level 0.5?

Of course I was responding to bifat, not ham. :D

4gentE, send to hardware/CRT! This is dogma 1 already, entry level. ;-) Of course there is no "need" to go fully fundamentalist - whatever you enjoy and floats your boat. :-)

Yeah, it would be, but I cheat. If it seems visible on hardware that I didn’t manage to run full screen code inside of a single screen refresh, I resort to emulator and go frame by frame to see where I failed. That’s a VERY unfair advantage over legit, dogma 1 abiding man.

bitfat: the only question is how you gonna train your generative AI on Amiga for Toxic Modulo 3.

tomkh: thanks for asking! I don't know yet if I'm going to be involved in the making of TM3, but in the inner circles of mad wizardry some delicious new brew is concocted for you all to enjoy. I wouldn't rule out any combination of dogma and AI :-)

I guess a network of 10-20 Amiga 4000s should be able to produce (via AI) gfx for the likes of TM2 in way less than a 100 years. ;)

What Kieran said, up-thread.

Real Life Adult Shit Level One:

You have a full-time job, relationship and caring responsibilities at home, either children or elderly parents. Spare time for making stuff is in odd moments, on the train etc, with an emulator, when you're not wrung out by your ongoing relentless commitments. You have real hardware but can't find time to switch it on.

Real Life Adult Shit Level Two:

You have a full-time job, but have more time to spare as less Real Life shit is going on. Primarily using emulator, conserving ancient fragile hardware for final testing. I hope people using the dogma method are checking and replacing capacitors and power supplies. Pop! Oh dear, magic smoke is coming from my old machine!

Real Life Adult Shit Level Three:

Congratulations, you are sixteen again and hyperfocused. You have invented time-travel! You have the base level 1990 era hardware and tools you started with. You kept all your future knowledge intact and have loads of clever ideas that didn't occur to your younger self. Unfortunately, you find Boris Vallejo fantasy themed cheesecake pictures endlessly fascinating again.

Dogma Level 42: I DON'T GIVE A SHIT!

“Real Life Adult Shit”

Such sad lives. And for what? Bigger house? Fancier shoes? Rolex? Third new car you never have enough time to drive? Exclusive travel tours? New boobs for the mrs? New set of teeth? Surely not for bread, beer, internet and tshirts. Ten thousand+ years of civilisation and we get to do what we actually want to do only during train commutes. Something is very wrong about this.
