4th Annual Demoscene Card Exchange
category: general [glöplog]
I feel like at this point I need one of those fancy paper-craft "4" images like that one site does on anniversaries...
Welcome (or welcome back) to the fourth annual Demoscene Card Exchange!
Join us (again) for an end of year event about sending and receiving cards or postcards with other people in the Demoscene. All you have to is sign up, wait to get your recipients, then get creative! No purchases required (except maybe stamps). The deadline to join is November 3rd.
Sign up at https://demoscene.exchanges.cards
Read the rules and get more details at https://demoscene.exchanges.cards/rules

Here we go again! Some people have sent really neat things they made themselves, so please feel free to get creative, but even if you've super busy sending a regular card or postcard from a store is perfectly fine.
If you decide to post photos of what you receive, don't forget to cover any personal information like addresses before posting. If you post to places with hashtags, maybe use something like #demoscenecardexchange to make them easier to find, if you remember.
Like before, there's still an an opt-in feature that automatically appears on January 9th PST to allow people to check who was assigned to them to work out late or missing cards.
If you miss the deadline there is the "last chance" exchange, but please please please make sure you get in before the deadline as you'll have more options.
Thanks again for participating! 🙂

I've thought about having an email-only sign-up in the off season where people can be notified when the exchange goes live, or an opt-in to keep your email for next year, but I don't know if people would use/want that.
I would still delete all non-email data between exchanges like I do now, so you'd still have to fill in your address, etc.
Thoughts?

signed up, thanks for organizing it!
See you on the other side of the post office!
Hey, just 2 weeks left to sign up! Don't forget!

Despite guards against it, there have been a couple reports of double submit issues where people report the site tells them there's already someone with that name.
If that happens to you, please send me and email, PM on Nectarine, or DM on Discord with some identifying details so I can get you your ID.
Thank you all! 🙂

Thanks for organizing! This time I'm in. Love postcards!
Just a reminder, deadline's the 3rd!

You can still sign up for about a week if you miss the deadline, but you'll be limited to one card, so make sure to get in before the 3rd.

Screw it, I'm in.
Missed this last year, but not this time - signed up!
Been meaning to do this before but have always been too busy. But.. yeah.. screw it.. let's add more fuel to the fire. Signed up! :D
Signed up, first time I'm doing this. Already started on my cards.
Hey! So assignments got posted. 🙂
If you gave the app your email address, you'll get notified in about 18ish minutes.
If not, then just check the site https://demoscene.exchanges.cards in the same browser you signed up with and, if you didn't clear all your site data, it will take you back to your assignments page automatically. Neato!

I had issues with my usual matching algorithm, so I did all the matching by hand this year. I used helpers to ensure I didn't give people duplicate assignments, but definitely let me know if something is goofy.
As always, the exported data for matching only includes IDs, country codes, and the requested local/international counts. No names, addresses, or emails.

With that, thank you for participating and let's go lick some stamps! 🤪 (Yuck. Maybe just use the peel-and-stick ones.)

Can confirm, got notification and the page has addresses now.
And mailed. The total cost per card (card + postage) was around 3 eur, which is refreshing compared to secret santas where just postage is like 50 eur..
First batch sent! And I also received my first card, from sol! Thanks mate! <3
Last chance assignments posted!
We got two extra sign-ups and with the remaining availability I was able to give them all the cards they asked for.

My cards are made, I just haven't gotten to writing in them so I can send them out. 😅 Should be able to get them out this week.

For those who visit the site on their phone, I fixed the mobile layout for the assignments page. Apologies for not noticing how broken that was sooner.
Cards sent.

I'm curious, did the glued attachment survive? (in retrospect, I should have put the cards in envelopes)
Cards sent. It might take 2-3 weeks for them to arrive.
I also received my first card from sol today, and the glued attachment survived. It is absolutely amazing and surprising. Thank you!

It did on mine, nice touch!
Good to hear it survived for at least some. It's nothing major, basically just a sticker, but made with a 3d printer so it's possible the postal system isn't kind to it.
It did survive on my card as well! Really neat idea, thanks!
In other news: 2nd and last batch (non-DE) sent out as well! Hope they'll all find their way :)
