RIP MAF

category: general [glöplog]
RIP MAF, I've seen him at Saturne Party 3. He was a Protracker Addicted, really talentous who can talk about techniks and help other musicians with some samples from him. At Saturne, he was playing with a TB 303 and tried to convert sounds from this machine to Protracker, for some Acid-Goa forthcoming songs. Nice "souvenirs".
43 is a shitty age to die of cancer, I often met MAF in parties around 95/98 with the Silicon and Syndrome /cocoon people. I didn't realize he was so young back then, maybe because he was a bit tall and was cool as Fonzy. Kind of person that makes you feel everything will be ok at the party. He was a very popular musician and person. Everyone had his mods in their playlist back then.

Note: most of his mods file in recent collection have the wrong mod format, not protracker , (some other format rename din mod), I had to search mods anthology and some mod archive sites to get the right stuff for mdmod and protracker.

This is devastating :( Maf is and will always remain one of my favorite demoscene musicians. An unique style, and he mastered such a large palette of music genres that he could blend as he wished. Pure genius.

Merci Krabob, Benoît aurait kiffé voir cette compilation sur megadrive.
Cet ami "extra-terrestre" va beaucoup nous manquer, nous ne l’oublierons jamais.
RIP MAF

Hey I've got another comment. I had a long estrangement with my sister, we didn't talk for about 10 years. And recently we got talking again, so there's lots of news and e-mail exchanges.

She lives in France. And one thing she just wrote to me was:
"EVEN NOW I regularly find myself humming that ridiculous 'C'est la marmelade de ma grand mère' song you once played to me. Catchy indeed. I quite like it actually!"

Haha... you see it's true, Maf sticks in your head. I downloaded the large collection of Maf past & future songs (including unfinished stuffs) and maybe I'll share some with her.
Maf, you are gone and my heart sinks.

Your art was pure life and happiness and here we are all to pay our respects, as you offered us all the same feeling since our teenage years. You where one of a kind and will continue to live on in our hearts, memories and playlists. Again, thanks for everything and rest in peace.

What a terrible news, for so many different reasons. I had the pleasure to meet Benoit C several times in the real life, always a pleasant guy putting you a smile on your face.
I have 2 memories to share. One at the Arf! Party (in 1999 I guess?), CDs were already the norm, but he came with his very old car, playing a cassette with... his MOD music, of course :) Simple mind behind a real genius.
The other memory, it's of course his musics on PC Team (also mentioned earlier in this thread), thanks to him I discovered another side of the demoscene... I always thought people back then on PC had to be "rigid" and "rigorous", making polished prods without the fun part... Rez, Maf and some other folks... presented back then another side of the demomaking, and oh! boy it was GREAT.
Thank you Maf, I will never forget you.

i never meet him but i "meet" his tunes. Rest in peace MAF
Too sad. When I listen to Puipui 3, 4th World Light, it is synthwave before the genre was invented. Benoit is a pioneer.

Man, I just rewatched this demo, with one of the most excellent soundtrack from the 90s: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=1772 and realized this is MAF too.

We used to snail mail (swap a lot) back in the days and we were group mates (hexod, syndrome...). I still remember my visit at his home in Alsace and Saturne Party 96. Good memories that I'll keep. RIP MAF. Condolences to his family and friends. :'(

(already commented previously)
I'm still listening my Maf playlist at least 1 time per week!
You are still with us.

I feel sorry for him. It is impossible for 43-year-old Benoit Charcosset to have cancer.
