people really don’t want things to be longer than an hour

PC-compo is longer than an hour usually.

"Midschool" must have been an unfortunate choice, never ever have seen that terminology before to refer to Amiga, Atari ST, TIC-80 and SNES.

My 1 cent.

c64 - oldschool
zx spectrum - oldschool
amstrad - olschool
amiga-500 - destroyed the platforms above, an oldschool-bully
amiga-1200 - better than a500, but not very good for playing Doom
PC-386 - Similar to a1200. Not very good for playing Doom
PC-486 - Better than a1200 at chunky effects. Good/decent Doom playability
Pentium - much better than a1200 at chunky effects. Great Doom playability
amiga-1200 with 060 - a bit worse than 486 at chunky effects, but not much worse. Perhaps better at other kind of effects. Still can't play Doom

What about a Doomschool category?

Amiga should just be its own category ;)

"8bit", "16bit", "other" would make nice categories, and get rid of ends and schools.

"..and the Meteoriks in the "Other" category goes to..." surely sounds great ;)

Not sure what I think of Fantasy Platforms in midschool...
Maybe have an 'Open Category' or something for the likes of this and everything else.

Fantasy consoles being in the midschool category was a compromise, where it felt the least worse option that didn't exclude them. I don't think putting a c64 against pico8 is fair, as c64 requires so much more knowledge and work for similar graphics, but pico8 verses a high end pc demo is equally unfair, where pico8 graphics are no where near the pc's level of detail. So the best compromise was midschool.

As for the open category, this is essentially a wild compo category. Then you are having to decide, do we allow all wild compo entries, even if they are not real time executables but animations or physical entries like a home made computer or even a video? Does that fit the idea of the meteoriks?

The last possibility for fantasy console productions was a separate award just for them, though this seemed premature to me as they are still a fairly new and niche set of platforms.

I'm summarizing discussions the overall jury had here, we did think about what would be fair and the opinions I've seen here were also present in that discussion. It would be good to hear what everyone thinks should happen in future. With new fantasy consoles being developed with the demoscene in mind, such as microw8, and the increase in productions for them, this is going to be an ongoing issue.
It's very common to define oldschool as "16-bit or narrower data bus". I think the definitions of this year's Meteoriks categories is the first time ever that I have seen "16-bit or wider data bus" used as a distinction.

Precise definitions aside, and rather thinking about what our conceptions of the categories are (which the definitions then ought to match), for me this is quite clear:
- Oldschool is when the CPU is so weak that you have to do tricks with other parts of the hardware to do interesting effects. IMO, typical 16-bit machines like Amiga 500 and Atari ST clearly fall into this category.
- Midschool is when the CPU is fast enough to do a meaningful amount of work per pixel per frame. It's accelerated Amigas and 32-bit PCs. It's mid to late 90's software rendering. Fantasy consoles fit perfectly into this category by this definition.
- High-end (or modern) is the GPU era. Of course that's a huge span in performance, but it's not my impression that many people make demos for old GPUs (as a deliberate limitation) anyway. We do see the occasional Android or Raspberry Pi demo, which are then classified as high-end.

Although I agree that Amiga 500 demos and 060 AGA demos are two very different things, the category defintions should also take into account the number of productions that fall into each category. The current split, artifical as it might be, seems to me to a be a reasonable one.

I just want to say that I am extremely grateful that the Meteoriks team does such a wonderful job. I may not agree with their nominations, but I would prefer not to be nominated at all than not to experience a Meteoriks ceremony.

So far, the team has done a great job, and what they decide is up to them. If I had put in that much work and then read comments like "me me me, but my platform is more important", I would wonder why to bother.

So please. CHILL!

what pixtur said. the meteoriks are a great show and it's part of the idea of a jury price to represent the jurys opionion instead of most possible consensus. plus, the juries always explain their decisions, which makes the award ceremony interesting.

also, we (spaecigps) were taken by surprise by our nomination in the high and category. at the same time we're obviously very happy about the additional exposure for our demo, which was released at a small (and weird) party. i can assure you that it was a work of love.

in that spirit, thanks to all the meteoriks orgas and congrats to all the nominees!
looking forward to the show.

What pixtur said 100%. Diversty in any and all shapes, age and color is what makes as great as a unity. We haven't seen each other for a while - perhaps that in itself is frustrating. We'll get there :)

Congratulations to all nominees - stunning work.
