Can you help out a total noob in the scene?

category: general [glöplog]
Hello!

I've recently started making music on MPT. I made some tracks and I want to have one actually released on a demoparty.

This is gonna sound emarassing to hell... But, how do I make a submission to a compo?
Thank you for reading and excuse my total stupidity! :)

On websites of demoparties there is usually a way to submit to a compo of that party (e.g. via e-mail or via a party management system).
A more complete answer for future reference:

At a "standard" (physical presence) party, you travel there, pay the entrance fee, and you get a code ("votekey") in return which you can use to log in to the local party intranet and find the submission form. If you can't attend the event, depending on the party you can either send your entry to someone who is at the party (who can then pick your prize up if you win), or directly to the organizers.

For online parties this intranet website is exposed to the Internet - how you get your votekey is usually up to that given online party, some are free, others have a nominal entrance fee.

Hi looper231

in first, nice you did something. It depends on the Party. some allowing remote Entries, especially in this Corona times and some have the need to be physical present at the party.

An alternative might be to ask someone who is attending a demoparty if he can try to hand in your release.
Thank you for the help!

also, not every party has a 'tracked music' compo, so, you better check that first on their website. (or you can render your tracked music to mp3 and partake in a '(streaming) music' compo, accepting you will be up against DAW rendered music)
If Revision 2022 Online takes place (no official announcements yet) there’s a great chance that there will be a »tracked music compo«.

If (when) you have a specific party in mind and can't figure it out how to take part in compo, you can ask again in the same thread. Otherwise refer to gargaj's post.

There's one downside to choosing Revision for your first music release though: At Revision we're getting a lot of submissions for the music compos. So much in fact that we as organizers have to do a preselection and filter the entries down to an amount that results in a not too long, nice to listen to compo. This process is by its nature Fucking Subjective (TM), and although we and other party organizers try to make sure the preselection juries are comprised of seasoned musicians from a wide variety of musical backgrounds there just is no perfect objective set of criteria with which to measure what's a good track vs a not so good one.

So, chances are that your first anticipated release at a bigger party will end in a terrible disappointment for you. If that happens - you can be assured that happened to pretty much all of us, and most of us several times. The only thing you can do there is: Carry on. Hone your craft and try again. Until it works, and trust me, it'll feel SO earned. :)

Or, try a smaller event first. Those usually have less entries and it's way more likely for your entry to make it, and for you to find people to talk about it afterwards.

What kb said, but just to add: any submissions to Revision that don't make it through preselection will remain unreleased. So you can submit to Revision first, be prepared for it to not make it through (and pleasantly surprised if it does...), and submit it elsewhere if needed.

It happened to me in the Streaming Music compo at Revision 2019, didn’t make the compo, won the Outline 2019 compo with the same song :D

I think Assembly used to release even the entries that didn't make it through the preselection, I seem to remember arguing against it on the Assembly forums :) This was in the noughties, I'm quite sure they've relented since then. I just realized I haven't actually visited Assembly since 2010 or something...

You delivered a great speech there in 2012, that's two years later! ;D
Oh wow, I braced myself for a cringe fest, but that's actually comedy platinum! Well done, 2012 me!

I think the cringe fest was the other guy on stage (not Netpoet obviously) ;)

Uh boy, 2012 me looks like 15kg less ... /o\

Perfect. We are done here.

Now that parties are going to happen again, plan a trip to a party (maybe in your area) and release it there :) Check for parties: https://www.demoparty.net/

I'm afraid, that Georgia (The country) is the only place where the term "Demoscene" doesn't ring a bell to anyone... :D

reed: the smug 'see what i did there'-look around after the joke certainly made it comedy :D

Most of it is brain matter, I'm sure. I've lost a bunch of hair up top since 2012, but I've attributed it to increased brain activity.
