What does Demosceners thinking about NFT?

Isn't the fractal thingy currently adorning the site from some demo, or do I remember wrong?
it's from this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXzgrtntRTY
FWIW I love how united the demoscene appears to be in their dislike for NFTs. Sometimes I feel like either everybody around me is going nuts. Or it's gotta be me, right? But then I come back to Pouet, my trusty beacon of sanity, and I'm back on my feet.
I think that perhaps those in favor of NFTs are keeping quiet because of the massive dislike against it. Everybody has the right to voice their opinion of course, but currently I have no plans to change my position on it.
There are at least several (ex)sceners into NFTs. Most advertise their NFTs on twitter and they usually can't stop tweeting about it.
Yeah, the current ecosystem of NFTs doesn't really allow you to keep quiet about it.
What I love the most about NFTs is that the art is usually fucking terrible as well. Those Bored Apes are absolutely trash and I love watching it collapse eventually.
NFT transactions now have to be meticulously reported to the IRS it seems (yay!): https://twitter.com/UrsulaV/status/1457192006657224707?s=20
Haha good because crypto is a scam.
Though I'm not a fan of the finance wolf piece, as a demomaker I'm very interested by all the blockchain evolution as a way to manage a community in a decentralized way. At least it has potential.
What exactly does a blockchain provide that we didn't already solve, and better?
Today? Nothing yet. I'm interested by how it's going to evolve, and I wonder if it will succeed: How to handle a mass of data and people in a purely democratic way, how to make the data belong to no-one in particular (no privileged access to the databases, community votes, rotating roles, etc.). The validation of the blocks is already interesting in some blockchains (including some randomness to pick the next validator), but nothing is mature yet. Still, any self-driven organization with no gentry is appealing to me. Do not take this as criticism, I'm glad that the demoscene has people with the tech knowledge, the dedication to spend the time, and the access to huge servers so that we can have pouet, scene.org, etc. So to give you one example to answer your question: As we explicitly depend on specific people with specific skills/profile, we don't have a system that is resilient if that small number of people disappear for any reason. Maybe the blockchain tech will solve this one of these days.
I'm not pro-web3 (I think it's a lot of BS), but the planet argument is just a red herring seriously.
Web3 run on PoS blockchains, or ETH that plan to move on PoS soon. And in the meantime, yeah you can find the "useless" GPU use quite bad, but using as your main argument is bad faith & an emotional manipulation.
ETH will never move to PoS. That "soon" has been 3 years, they're just infinitely postponing because they know they'd tank the currency value if they would change it.

I don't disagree on the first half, but blockchain tech won't fix that, all it provides is immutability, and if you don't know why that's bad, ask the glöperators.
I don't get the "the currency value will tank" part.
Switching to the "green" PoS is far better on a marketing point-of-view.
They sure were overoptimistic on the planning/feasibility.
To me this just looks like common shipping delays / Hanlon's razor.

Value is cost and with PoW, cost is energy spent. If the energy is no longer necessary to spend, cost of "manufacture" is lowered and the new devalues the old.

Have fun telling your children that in a few years, btw.

Are you serious?

So low.
You perfectly know Web3 is NOT what's killing the planet right now.
There are enough valid arguments against web3 to not use this cheap one.

As an engineer, the two main arguments against anything are whether it's stupid/unnecessary/etc or if it's dangerous. The idea of "Web3" (as it is now) is currently both, and being dangerous (in more ways than one) takes precedence.
Wouldn't it be more intellectually honest to only target ETH with this argument then?
(and BTC, but it's not NFT/web3 related)

In terms of climate-dangerous, you could argue to restrict the argument to proof-of-work (for now - I'm still skeptical whether crypto as such can scale AT ALL)
That only leaves a few other kinds of dangerous before we get to useless/unnecessary.

who cares? dogecoin is the future. Elon Musk said so! ;)
