What aims in your life have you reached already / not reached yet?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
I assume many demosceners have the aim of winning first place at a competition at Revision, Assembly or some other big party. But I am sure you also have other goals in life.

I always longed for recognition of my intellect, and I have gotten some by having been entered in the World Genius Directory (www.psiq.org). What I haven't achieved yet is to use my intellect to create something really great, such as cure for cancer.

I felt quite pleased when I could buy myself a decent house. It was however more a question about money than my extraorninary intellicence.

at the moment I'd be happy if I was debt free and my kids would grow to become healthy and responsible adults. trying to keep the aims modest.

@Adok "curing cancer" is never gonna happen, as it's not a single disease but a group of diseases, so don't feel bad if you don't. progress on specific types of cancers is more realistic. still, in many cases, today we merely understand better what's going to kill you. for some types of cancer, the increase in life expectancy has been abysmal, despite over 50 years dedicated for "eradicating cancer".

Lobotomy is becoming an increasingly attractive goal for me these days.

goal achieved:

The moment i realized that everything (including the you in the question) is just a cascade of concepts (formed from early childhood and further shaped every day) stacked together like lego bricks into larger concepts at infinitum, everything else just becomes a game of trying to be good to others, animals and planet and basically, whilst at the same time entertaining the concept of self with personal 'interests' of which the demoscene (read: merging some creativity with puzzle solving doing these small intros) is only one of many until my interest in it fades again and i move on to other things again :D

Current/future goals:
Not to get too sappy, but i guess one of those long term 'goals' for my ego to share joy and love to others (by generally trying my best to be positive and supporting to others).

Being an imperfect human there will always be stuggles along the way ofcourse, nor is there any concrete end-point to get to, so i'm just enjoying the scenery :D

I got a wife and kid and won Revision. I don't have a car anymore, but I crashed several cars. Next month I'll be debt free. So what's next now?

I've always been interested in performance. Unfortunately I'm still only dabbling in software land. The real performance comes from hardware and then the real performance of hardware comes from progress in.. physics I assume. I wish I could know this area better.

Muscles! I still haven't experienced the glorious feeling of being able to tare a phone book in half just through sheer arm power.

Allright! I got three Macs here to let there be no doubt I have reached goals in life. I could rip two of them in half with my thumbs anytime

As someone who works in cutting edge microprocessor design, let me tell you that hardware is just trying to keep up with the ever increasing layers of abstraction and incompetent coding. If you want performance, make it your life goal to teach programmers how not to squander most of the raw hardware power at their disposal. I'm looking at you, Slack.

That's a good start but according to a Chinese proverb true happiness requires that there's five generations under the same roof.
Yes, but that is a shortened form of "True happiness requires that there's five generations under the same roof that all live in separate quarters so that they can wake up at different hours without disturbing the sleep of the generation that wants to sleep a little longer on Saturdays. There is also 1 TV per generation so we don't have to watch the same shows. Also there are 5 different air conditioning apparats so that the temperature can be adjusted individually per generation according to their fancy. The windows may be opened or closed separately per generation. Each generation may at any time escape the nagging of each other".. That is the true happiness.

Now that's a somewhat unwieldy proverb.

that's just the clunky translation; it flows beautifully in mandarin. Also it's like 5 pictograms; very compact.

I've had 17 books published (a combination of novels, poetry, medical books and a few others) and a play produced, pretty happy with those. But in reality I've wanted something quite different from life rather than career milestones. Well, I'm already very happy so there's that, not much else left to do.
