Scene: The Good Parts

category: general [glöplog]
Using the definition on Wikipedia, social conservatism is something I completely detest - it's the sheer horror.

AFAIU it's actually formalized on big parties.

Hmm, yeah, I actually forgot about that already. I had to clear some stuff up with my Revision entry. But that's the sad reality about predatory megacorps and their crappy battles seeping into our little world, and we've found ways to deal with it (mostly).

Oops, above posting was in the wrong thread. Can be ignored in this context.
Positive things about the demoscene, easy! It combines nerding around with the message party (Feierei) and good mood (Gute Laune), nice talks, booze, travelling around, safespace for juvenile behavior, provides an audience and deadlines to achieve interesting nonsense on obsolete computers, and on non-obsolete computers too, for tooling. Lots of friends and contacts. I tried several hobbies, this is the best.

Agreed. Even when compared to other computer related hobbies, I think the scene is uniquely fun because it's all those hobbies combined. You're not locked into just competitive programming, maker space hardware tinkering, indie games development or whatever; you can do all of that and more!

i always liked the competitive "fuck you" element. :)
these days the criteria are somewhat meaningless - we've past the point of shadebob records and being able to compete with big budget commercial / research projects on graphics terms. and it's all tongue in cheek & friendly compared to 20-30 years ago. but still - the kindof rap battle-esque spirit of "im going to do what you did, but better and cooler, and throw it in your face" - and the mutual respect that follows - is amusing, and sets the scene apart from other related pursuits (creative coding scene, art scenes, graphics research, indie gaming etc), particularly when experienced as part of a big compo at your favourite party. that's the "demoscene spirit/attitude" that kept me interested over the years above almost any other factor.
sometimes it even motivates you to try and do good things. nothing like a bit of peer pressure and a looming deadline.

also, i have to mention that demosceners(/democoders) - at least ones who actually make stuff and get it done - often have some really nice attributes. creativity, flexibility, a really wide range of knowledge across the board (audio,graphics,system,tools,design..), ability to hammer stuff out and get it done.
while it's true that the demoscene doesnt really fit the old "talented teens making amazing never-before-seen things on home computers all in 100% assembler!!1" image these days and can't really compete with the cutting edge of real-time graphics, demo coders still have a way of coming up with creative solutions and uses of techniques and hacking stuff to actually *get something done*.

smash: that's what shader showdown battles are for nowadays

Like any hobby/subculture, it’s a good place to make friends. Stick around long enough and the connections you’ve made through the scene turn into lasting friendships and opportunities of cooperation and creation.

Getting motivated to do something, be it contributing in some way or making a prod. And not to forget the nice people you meet along the way while pulling on the same string.
Lovely sense of humour!

tomkh: they are surely entertaining but don't interest me in terms of competing. and i don't think id be that great at memorising raymarching shaders

This should probably be in the unpopular opinions thread but... that's exactly why I became disinterested in shader-showdown.
What intrigued me was evolving an idea into a shader live from start to finish (or watching someone do so), but the focus shifted more and more towards the end-result, disregarding the journey, so now it's just a "one-scene shader prod code recited live" thing. psenoughs shader deathmatch or whatever it's called just underlines this even further, making it impossible to follow the actual journey which (granted) is not undertaken by most participants nowadays anyways. To me this trend made shader-showdown battles boring as there's no way to comprehend the process, but I realize that that's a niche view since a substantial amount of people weren't able to follow the written code either way.

This also goes against the rap freestyle battle attitude which shader-showdown is often touted as / compared to btw. but apparently the majority prefers fake freestyle battles nowadays...

Trying to imitate people who made marvellous (and sometimes "impossible") things with their computers.

jco: The very first thing you wrote me (in German) was, "You have three horny holes, but one of them yaps too much for me." It's rare to be greeted so warmly and kindly, unless it's a buddy. Do not make yourself a wrinkle. Nothing that two beers can not cure. ;)

@aqu, ha, that is acutally a translation of a song title (google "drei geile löcher", it's on my top ten over the top sexist songs list). There must have been some sort of context that I can't recall, but this is part of it, so if you (or anyone) felt personally addressed that was obviously not intended. Also, after having had a few beers and during demoparty hype I sometimes forget that not everyone might "get" my random associations/puns/references. ;)

should make this song part of my "organ" live program, along with more "kassierer" songs...

on a sidenote, when in any kind of demoscene chat, or even more so at an actual party, I don't overthink what I say/write because I feel pretty safe being on the "excessive" and "extroverted" side, to get back to the original topic of this thread. good point being a bit more sensible when in more public places like twitch, though.

jco: At first I thought you were someone from the past with a different nickname who made these kinds of jokes all the time. I was clearly stoned that day and unable to counter properly, and was zombie babbling, so hm. I don't usually use Twitch, only for the demoscene. Twitch doesn't accept 3LN, so I chose aaqquu, which you didn't like.... harhar. "No matter how you do it, it's right wrong.". another thread reached chaos, but it's a good part

I should provide you a bunch of 90s rap tapes next time we made - none of those "Ballermann" things comes even close to top ten in this context :)

I'd recommend 2 Live Crew for the beginning :) the "löcher"-joke is much older than the ballermann-sHit but, so no need to google it, liking "Die Kassierer" shows, there is some hope (:
