The Meteoriks Awards 2021
category: general [glöplog]
We're doing it again!
(Was there ever any doubt about it?)
Twelve out of ten sceners want there to be another round of Meteoriks awards this year, and who are we to disappoint?
The Meteoriks Awards 2021 are setting out to honor the best productions of 2020, and as usual we're asking everyone to participate by becoming a juror!
JURY DUTY
"We" - right now that is just the Meteoriks organizing team and a handful of last year's jurors. We cannot and should not decide on the categories, award nominees and, ultimately, the laureates all by ourselves, and that's why we need you to sign up to be part of the jury! You know you want to!
Just so you know what you're getting yourselves into, these are your duties as jurors:
Discuss this year's categories with your fellow jurors. Since 2020 was... different, we're going to have a slightly different set of categories this year.
Review last year's productions in any way you see fit for your category
Identify up to five nominees
Choose a laureate
One member out of each jury should represent their category on stage during the awards show
All in all, this will take between four and eight evenings' worth of time out of your busy schedules, mostly spread across February.
Our website is not ready yet, so to apply for juror duty, simply send me an email at meteoriks21 @ (my username) . net or hit me (dojoe#6356) up on the Demoscene Discord!
We're looking forward to working with you, and to a great 2021 edition of the awards!

And here I am, once again, asking for you to add a page to the meteoriks page explaining who Giles Constant was.
sol: i believe that was purposefully removed on request of the family.
plus we all remember what an awesome bastard he was!
(i meant that positively obviously, before someone misreads it and thinks i'm an awesome bastard as well :P)

I guess Sol's point was that "we all" gets smaller and smaller over time.

hmm :)
in sofaworld!
Heh, true! Fixed! :)
I mean, I trust he was an awesome bastard, but I have no idea whatsoever who he was.
I'm sure there's a way to explain who he was and what he did without digging into whatever someone might find objectionable.
Everybody has a lot of different aspects; I'm sure it would be possible to write a dozen completely different but entirely truthful descriptions of who I am, for example.
I'm not after some realistic gritty image, I'd be fine with some glossy pr-positive image of whoever he was.
I'm curious. I'm interested. I'm frustrated that someone whose memory is doubtlessly worth celebrating is, for everyone but a small inner group, completely unknown.

Close your eyes and listen to this prod: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=59107
For me that's MeteoriKs legacy and that's how I'll always remember him. Perhaps a list of demoscene contributions could be put on the meteorik's website, just so that peope who really have no clue can at least look up some stuff.

I'd be completely happy with a page listing demoscene contributions.
what part of "purposefully removed on request of the family" inspires you to keep hammering this issue?
xTr1m:
The music in Gaia Machina was made by Velo, though ;) But MeteoriK coded the synth so I guess that counts too ^^

I know, and of course it counts!
Good pick, Ian. That's my favorite of meaty's own tracks! <3

1) Let's honor a person's memory by naming a yearly awards gala by him
2) Let's bury a person's memory on request of the family
Let's pick one, please.
It's fine by me that we don't talk about Giles Constant.
But let's talk about MeteoriK. There should be no reason not to list his demoscene contributions?
Based on this thread I already know 100% more about him; apparently he made a nice sounding synth, at least. And he was a coder.
sol_hsa: you seemingly have no idea how disrespectful your incessant balking appears to others.
Well I for one don't feel disrespected, and I think you (Sol) do have a point there. We need to find a balance between preserving Meaty's legacy and respecting the Constant family's wishes - and renaming the awards is not an option ;)
There is some material out there already that we could simply link to, and I personally think that would be okay, also considering that a couple years have passed now and the wounds might no longer be as raw as they used to be.

FAQ page updated, let me know what you think.
alternatively you can leave his real name out of it for the sake of the family request. For them he was mostly Giles but that's 99,9% irrelevant to his scene presence anyway. Especially for those who need to learn who he was via the FAQ.

Yes. For me, the situation looked like this: You're wearing a "never forget" shirt. I ask you never forget what. You tell me to shut up. But I guess I'm the bad guy.

That's more than I asked for. Thank you. That should shut up me and any others who are curious.

I agree. Using the scene names is enough.
