Any demo on the Apple App Store?

category: general [glöplog]
There is also a tracker in the App Store, it is SunVox.

It is by far the best music program on the iPhone, i love it!
Ups wrong link... this is the correct link sunvox

One day for me. Still, it's a locked-down consumer platform from a company led by one of the seemingly most self-absorbed and generally unsympathetic public figures alive. You could choose to support a better device if you're a hobbyist...

Did you apply for a company membership or a private one?

The reason there are no demos on the App Store is that stuff only happens on the demoscene when someone is enthusiastic enough to make it happen. In this case, the necessary are:

* Code / port the demos. - DONE, by several people
* Pay the $100 and go through the submission process. - DONE, by at least one person
* Argue with Steve Jobs about why he should change the rules - not done yet. This seems to be the point at which people are giving up and going back to writing demos instead.

PauloFalcao, if you care about this so much then have you considered that *you* might be the person to finish the job?

gasman, i would finish the job if i had started it. Like i sad, i do not have a membership, i did not programmed a demo for the iPhone, and i had not submitted a demo to approval.
So i have really nothing to argue about with Steve Jobs.

I had stated this thread with a question: Any demo on the Apple App Store?
And the answer is simple: No.

I would be really excited if someone was able to put the first demo on the App Store.
somehow "go make a demo about it" is fitting here :)

Jokes aside, and no offense PauloFalco, but i-whatever is targeted at consumers (Apple is becoming more and more of a consumer company flogging cheap previous-generation bulk-hardware components in shiny design at expensive prices like B&O for instance) and consumers are totally clueless mostly... So unless it's an interactive "app" maybe they'll compare the graphics to Avatar (or other random mainstream) movie. "I downloaded this strange thing, it's a movie but looks bad, why didn't they use proper tools to make it?"

Most geeks (in fact most people I know with an iphone) jailbroke it, so personally I'm very suspicious if it's worth the effort (AND ___ONE HUNDRED___ BLEEDIN' DOLLARS!!!) putting demos on the app store... People who can appreciate the technical prowess of demo effects also know how to jailbreak it.

Apple sure know how to rip off both developers and customers.

radiantx: ok, it took me about 3 months last year, and no customer representative to contact, Android seems much more developer friendly to me...

Yeah, wbs ported Yellow Rose of Texas quite a while ago and it got rejected because lack of interactivity, IIRC (possibly also being mis-interpreted as "demo version").

If somebody wants to put a demo in App Store, I think it probably needs to have some kind of interactivity - like the available plasma effects. Possibly it could be enough to bundle a few demos together, the interactivity being able to select which demo to watch?

PS. The open source Oolong engine contains frustum-culling-optimized port of San Angeles Observation (gles version), and it runs quite smoothly. I don't think anybody has tried to submit it to app store though.

jaw: Android is definitely a more open and attractive platform for tinkering, as well as for a lot of software and business models which strictly aren't possible on the Iphone given Apple's rules. OTOH I do believe the Iphone developer docs are slightly better than the Android ones, but that's a minor thing.

jaw, i definitely agree with you, Apple is becoming too arrogant, the thing about controlling the way an app is programmed is just to restrictive and unfair.

Why can't i use my PC to program an iPhone app?!

So probably the best way to code an run an iPhone demo is just to jailbroke it..
Although, like tonic said, i think that an demo with a menu, or some kind of interactivity would be accepted in the App Store.
A demo that used the touchscreen to tweak the demo in real-time would be cool, like zooming and panning the camera, or tweak the effects.
So, let's get this straight: you would like someone else to spend their effort and money creating something, for free, that's not a conventional demo and can't be called a demo, so that they can force it through the bureaucracy of an exclusive club that doesn't want it.

Sounds great! I'll start right away.

LOL, gasman, i think you definitely have a point, but that demo would be available throw the App Store, in a super easy install way, to 100 Million users, now that's nice!
Most demos now are too difficult run, because of software / hardware problems.
IMHO making DemoScene demos more mainstream is a good thing.
Most demos @ pouet are super easy to install, probably all except those linux demos that come in spare parts.

well, it is definitely easier to run any App Store app, than to run Optic Nerve LOL.
Really, in my case the problem is that i don't have a decent desktop pc with a good GPU, i only have a laptop with a crappy Intel GPU card :(
So i can't run most of recent demos :(
not to mention the jumalauta collection, the #1 source for demos on the app store!

also i'm not mad at all that timeless is on the store as a standalone app whereas i had to make the jumalauta collection1!!
I'm eager to see someone publishing one of those "Bad Apple" demos in the Apple Store! :D

It's actually cool to watch demos on the iPhone LOL
I can't see any video compression artifacts!!!
What kind of technology is this ?!
You mean that...
what?...
It's actually running?!...
like for real?!?!!
@rickymartin nice demo collection! :)
in fact, the best part about realtime demos for mobile phones is when it's cold outside, you're waiting for a train or whatever and you don't have any gloves with you... then it's time to run a demo!
(in fact back then i was thinking of doing a hands warmer mobile app that's basically public static void main() { while(1); } codewise... but... surely someone has already done that :D)
No reason not to demo on iOS with the JML collection app, since we can publish stuff now :)
(And, maybe I should put some of my exegfx stuff there? Hmmm)

i'd be happy to add almost anything to jmlcollection (which may have to be renamed if there end up being lots of groups :), as long as it can be added as a regular view controller with no/very few additional dependencies. pull requests very welcome: https://github.com/superjohan/jmlcollection
