POUET - three improvement suggestions
category: general [glöplog]
But yeah, perhaps worth splitting off to a different topic as it is not a Pouet-specific issue.
oh, the sea is good when wavy :)
@Gargaj please rename the thread if you can :)
something like DOS vs DOSBox
@Hellmood maybe you misunderstood me. Not I'm who should judge the platform for prods. Every author would have an option to choose them. And it doesn't mean it would be necessary to categorize the old products. The hacked screenshot was an example only, and Baudsurfers got the windows sign as a joke. What I only know, that how I would choose these icons for my prods.
Ok now, after the comments, I think SagaMusix showed the right direction. And platform tags will be enough help to show what is recommended to run my intros.
As for the PCSpeaker sound, still many modern PC's HDA chip has a mixer. Which is programmable from DOS protected mode. On my machines I can easily redirect the pcspeaker to my sound system with my tool (I wouldn’t call that a dirty hack - as some organizers used to mention).
peace! love! and have a fun!

Awww.. nothing matters and nobody cares! Thumb your own shit up, comment on your entries, the avg is fucked anyway, so whatever :D
ok, but it wouldn't be better, if the avg wouldn't be fucked :-D
more cats!
Re: "self-voting". Trying to be some kind of conduct police is pathetic. Everyone votes for their own prods, their groups' prods and their friends prods at parties. What's equally pathetic is keeping up appearances and trying to retain a clean score.

What okkie said
@Tomcat: Ok cool! It pretty much looked like you wanted to establish a list where my beloved Memories doesn't wear the "MsDos" icon ;) If you're joking, maybe use some more of these -> ;)
Other than i realised how much i wish that more demoparties would offer full equipped old school dos era pcs (i think @party does, but that may need more concrete advertisement). And please continue with your ... way... to connect pc speakers to the PA, as long as you don't try to replace all other hardware setups ;)

Does the PC need to be DOS era, or should it just be PC with a DOS boot? I don't see why can't you just boot up any modern PC with a FreeDOS/MSDos stick.
Because then there can't be a soundcard attached that is capable of MIDI and supported by msdos drivers?
@Gargaj @HellMood What hellmood said... A FreeDOS/MS-Dos stick with a modern PC doesn't allow for output to Covox/Midi sound devices, while real pentium hardware with Gus,mt32,covox,etc. runs perfectly fine.
So sure, Freedos/Ms-dos stick is fine as an option and i would like to see compatibility with a real dos machine as a requirement for more parties, but on the flip side then also allow for sound output and/or except either Dosbox or a MS-dos/freedos PC with isa/pci soundcard, as an option for playback (which most, if not all parties already do).
If playing sound is a problem, then change the rules to only allow silent entries, in either case: hardware vs emulator is not the problem here.

These suggestions are absolute garbage.
So we need oldskool DOS PC - what Hellmood said,
and we need newskool DOS PC - what Gargaj said
;-) ;-) ;-)
and if both would have sound on the stream, that would be the perfect 256 byte compo (just saying).

what TomCatAbaddon said ;D
Totally agreed :-) ...just how will I test my entry on that oldschool Pentium+Gus+xxx if it's fast enough and the sound works ? ...and how will we make sure any party will have that machine ? (just saying) ;-) We need a volunteer who will pre-test all entries and then ship that machine to each party place :-p ...and what sound will the newschool thingy use ? My brain is in a LOOP :-)
I know who has the best retro PC collection :-) @arncht
In that size category, the only sound option for newskool DOS PC is the pcspeaker (i suppose) ;-)

Pn the topic of sound: Recently this raspi MT-32 hardware out. if somehow freedos could support this we'll be golden. Otherwise i agree it will be quite a mess using usb dos driver->serial->midi or something like that for getting proper sound on newskool dos pc's (without either isa/pci slots and/or game/serial/lpt ports).
However i think there a still quite a bit of options in between freedos on modern laptop and oldskool pc. I think there are still P3-450's out there with ISA support and things like more modern thinkpad's with serial/lpt and maybe even gameport connections that in theory be quite easy to get a range of sound options from.

typo fix: recently someone released a proper hardware MT-32 emulation device running on a raspberry pi (https://www.arananet.net/pedidos/product/pi-midi-a-baremetal-mt32-emulator-using-raspberry-pi3/)
Quting myself:
Should have written here right away of course.

(No, just kidding but I know people will go apeshit over this since it's one of the longest running memes of pouët.)
Anyway, the Mac platform(s) have been fuxxored for a long time due to Apple's constant rebranding and architecture changes. Suggestion, either unite all the Mac categories into one (hipsters will pick the wrong one anyway) or rename MacOS to MacOS 68k (the interesting one) so that it's not flooded with OSX residue and whatever Apple comes up with in the future.
Thank you for your attention.

Messing with config.sys, incompatible hardware, and different system specs and slightly incompatibles implementations (PC-DOs vs DR-DOS vs MS-DOS vs FreeDOS and various versions of each) is part of the DOS experience. If you're not happy with that, pick a better platform for your prods?
