Revision 2019 - April 19th to 22nd

category: parties [glöplog]
Yet again due to work reasons my wife and myself, along with CiH and his good lady were sofascening this weekend.

Kudos has to go to all orgas and everyone else involved at Revision 2019. The quality of entries in pretty much * all * of the competitions was very high. We particularly enjoyed the Oldskool demo compo but that isn't to say the other compos were unwatchable; far from it in fact.

Special mention goes out to Truck, FRaNKy, h0ffman and Subi along with others in the team for the excellent streaming once again via Twitch. The stream itself was largely stable with only small occasions where it borked although I think that was possibly down to the UK broadband networks being restricted.

So, once again, a pat on the back to all involved. Hope to see some of you at Outline in May :)

I would like to react to a part of this comment from the discussion on the Airplane? page. There are several things that Scamp wrote which I disagree with to various extent, but I'm not really in mood to put my finger in that troll gearbox.

However, this part makes me want to react firmly:
Quote:
As we all know, Revision is much "cleaner" than what Breakpoint used to be. It is always to see it that way when you aren't the person who is liable, but the you-can't-submit-an-entry-without-a-gema-check-rule to me feels awkward. No longer being allowed to sit on chairs in front of the bigscreen for "fire safety reasons" makes my butt hurt quite as much as this 'logic' hurts by brain.

I think I do understand the "come on, we're supposed to be anti conformists and do stupid things", which I can relate to. But security is not a joke, and a fire hazard is not something to ignore for the sake of scene spirit when you have filled one dark place with about a thousand sleep deprived people, many of whom in a more or less advanced state of drunkfulness.

Maybe you think the chances of a fire starting at Revision are remote at worse. It's certainly not something I think about when I attend the party either. Yet think about all the opportunities for one to spark with all that funny hardware. As low as those chances may be, they're clearly not zero. And the nature of an event like Revision certainly makes the risk much higher in the case something does happen. Read any news article about a fire that turned really bad, and you will find again and again that, surprise, security details were neglected.

So we can try to keep scene events as underground as we want, break rules and write swears words on the walls, but that doesn't mean being stupid and throwing away security. Otherwise we would risk having a really, really sad conclusion to it.

What a party! Thank your organizers for running such a smooth and wonderful event.

The only thing which bothered me:
I can confirm the wifi issues which has been mentioned in previous comments.
My laptop and raspi were unable to connect (or didn't receive any bytes) via wifi while my mobile had no issues.
I can rule out hardware and software issues causing this:
An ubuntu live cd didn't fix the issue while connecting the laptop to my mobile's hotspot worked as a charm (unfortunately, without being able to the intranet of course).

Previous year, wifi worked like a charm using the same gear.

And the fix was already mentioned: Stick to LAN where you can. The problem is just going to be worse, not better with people bringing more and more wifi devices every year.
Zavie:

It's just a matter of applying logic.

The risk of a fire breaking out isn't low, quite the opposite. PSUs do burn.

Normally building fires are deadly because people are asleep while the fire breaks out, or because they are trapped due to the only escape route being on fire.

If you look at it logically, Revision has the best-possible escape route situation I have ever seen at such an event location.

The only exception would be the sleeping area - it doesn't have direct fire exists, and as the name applies, people are sleeping there. In a freak accident, in case of a panic situation, people could run over other people sleeping there.

In the end, fire codes are written in a generic manner, which can cause them to not make sense for a specific situation.

It's good that laws and regulations exist, as not everybody is able or willing to use common sense and logic as their tools of choice.

But as a scener, I do have every right to at least point out that in additional to whatever regulations exist, logic still is a valid tool.

Jesus fuck. This was the best demo-party I have ever been to. Thanks to all the people involved for an epic event. And this one is the first one in a very long time that made me leave with enthusiasm and motivation to work on new prods and contribute more to the demoscene.

Speaking in front of a couple hundered people was a challenge for me but when everything went smoothly it was definitely an awesome feeling.

Personally I thought the network was fine. The views in this thread might be a bit skewed because pouet was having quite serious time-out issues :P

I agree that the sound was a bit too loud and harsh but... when that was the case I just went outside with some friends :)

And holy shit the weather!

But please: Replace the pizza stand, they make terrible pizzas to begin with and when you order some they take one that's been sitting there for hours and re-heat it.... It's awful.

+1 on the pizza issue.
Getting handed a ham pizza where you have to let loose a hound in order to track the ham slice (note: singular) on the damn thing, really should be a dealbreaker.

...wir könn' doch einfach mal 'n paar Eier machen...

I'm all game for a "Gulaschkanone" stand, you know, a stand that has some good ol' stews and a slice of bread.

The Wi-Fi worked well enough for most of the party, but during the PC demo compo, I couldn't access it at all (I was sitting at the second screen, AKA the Jumalauta lounge). So, no live voting for me, or indeed, no voting at all since I didn't have any device with me that had an Ethernet connection.

Holy hell this was a massive party! Thanks a million to everyone involved in making this event happen. We all owe you big time!

I really tried hard to see if I could find some constructive feedback on how to make this even better but the only thing I could think of, was to perhaps have a 10 minute "bio break" during the really long compo blocks. Sitting there, not wanting to miss an entry with watery eyes, jumping up and down trying to hold it for juuuuust one more entry. The weird feeling of happy sadness when seeing the final slide reveal that this was the last entry in the compo and already halfway up from the chair while hearing KB go "and since we are in a bit of a hurry we will move right on to the XYZ compo". Arrrrggh. The beers are cheap! Show some understanding :-D

Also, huge hugs to everyone I had a chance to chat with, sorry to those I didn't even though I wanted and I'll definitely see you all next year o/

@Punqtured: They did do that for the PC Demo compo a few years ago, but it wasn't fair on the first demo played after the break, as people were still getting beers or smoking.

Loved the party, thanks for all the effort and specially the demos!

Air con was a huge issue if you were sitting in the air flow, i totally got a sore throat from it and I did ask if it could be shut off. I guess if you weren’t in it’s path you wouldn’t have noticed it and it was a fairly packed party so moving our group wasn’t an option. Strange as previous years we’ve never had any issues.

Revision seems to get louder every year and wearing earplugs all the time does ruin the experience some what, you can’t really chat along with your fellow sceners, so I agree with that point too. I miss the speakers that stood on the floor, that way people who wanted it louder just got closer, now it seems it’s really loud all over the hall.

As for hotel prices, having spent more than a week traveling through Germany, it did seem that Saarbrucken was more expensive.. and Ari BnB is really not an option if you are concerned about security (which I am) so please don’t think that option works for all.

These points are all small issues and if someone else hadn’t mentioned it I wouldn’t have either but when it comes to deciding to travel to another country for the greatest party and you remember how ill and tired you were last year.. well they all add up. It takes a whole week out of me afterwards so maybe I’ll consider attending every other year.. maybe it’s just a bit too much for me 😳

Thank you for a lovely party, ich lebe x party

I am finally back from hibernation and want to thank everyone at revision this year. The compos were extraordinary. Thanks especially to everyone at the orga-team. You are doing such a great job year after year after year.

It is no surprise, that I had the best time at the dancefloors - no matter if inside or outside the partyplace.

To mention some more people: Irata for trailing the night away for the second time, early morning bonfire people, hardy, abyss connection, of course everyone at poo-brain. The crew from Aachen who surprised me a little bit, bit in a very positive manner. Ghandy. The ColScene. And all the other people I forgot or whose names I am not familiar with. The 2nd stage djs. Infodesk-Team. You are the people making the difference.

Too loud, too long, too expensive, too cold... are some people writing here really sceners? Do you ever visited Breakpoint before? :) Trinken bis zum Brechpunkt and hard alcohol inside allowed. ;)

Thanks to the team for the perfect organization!!!
Thanks to many old groups making this event to the perfect AMIGAAAAAA party!!!

I was at Breakpoint, yes. I tried sleeping at the freezing cold hangar until I realized every place at the noisy party hall is more comfortable and suitable for sleeping than the actual sleeping area. I'm also from Finland. When I started going to parties there usually weren't even showers at the party place, and some years before my time, there was a period where it was a good idea to be prepared for the cops to arrive and disperse the whole party because someone did a stupid. I'm sure some would refer to this as the "glory days".

I'm also an old fart who could have lived a healthier life so far. My body protests getting out of bed each morning, let alone the rigors of even a smooth and relatively comfortable demoparty like Revision. I probably would have been less exhausted at the end of the last compo block each night if the party had a less noisy shut-the-fuck-up space where you could just sit and shut the fuck up in peace.

I realize you can't have everything at an event like Revision and I recognize that the organizers are already doing all they can to make the event as enjoyable as possible. Massive respect. That said, they need to know what improvements we, the visitors, wish would happen. I trust their ability to discern what can be reasonably done. It's always a compromise between comfort and viability, yes, but nothing will ever improve if we just handwave and go "do u even freezepoint, bro".

thanks to orga team! revision was a blast as weather was perfect, too. :D

and compared to last year... they at least had a "technical issue" slide... ;)

see you next year in... of course oldschool compo...

Heaven^DSR
I can't find a "Tissot" watch...I'm afraid I might have lost it at the party.

Have you guys found anything like that?

First of all i'd Like to thank everyone making this edition of Revision that awesome, it really was a blast!
In need some time to go through all of this thread, but right now I just want to comment quickly on the rule concerning chairs in front of the Stage: yes, it's due to fire safety regulations and actually it also really only applies to the ~1,50m Center of the area including the Front Part of the Main floorway between the Tables. Maybe we should communicate this more clearly, we thought the taping on the Floor and the beamslide are enough.

Thanks again for a great Revision! And what an Amiga compo!

This year the sound volume was more reasonable than last year, it was nice being able to enjoy all the concerts! (IMO a bit less volume would be even better)

Regarding food, I'd highly welcome further food options, e.g. the Döner stand many years ago was one of my favorites. (Or generally, anything that's neither pure meat nor pure carbs)

One of the best easter-parties in the last decade for me! Thank you for organizing this and kudos for a smooth execution. Wheather made it even more enjoyable and I actually came back with a tan ;)

I want to second some things mentioned here:
- I am glad we are talking about how "Revision is much "cleaner" than what Breakpoint used to be" and I always have this in the back of my mind when people are complaining about this year's Revision being too loud at night. Sometimes it feels as silent as a graveyard at night compared to parties from the past. I sometimes miss the craziness and spontaneity and am happy when some it sparks back to life. For me someone playing one song on repeat over night actually has its pros and its charm. How would we have e.g. the hello-was-hollers from years ago still today?
- Pizza-Stand was horrible and overpriced, bring back the Pizza stand from three(?) years ago that served fresh, round pizza with incredibly well done toppings. Back then you could see everybody enjoying their Pizza. This year it just looked sad when I saw someone "eating" one of those "slices".

Otherwise I really enjoyed the smooth flight with revision airways. Thanks again!

yeah, pizza slices were not that good and well over priced for their quality.

vegan burgers were awesome.

some lighter food option would still be really good to have.

yeah, the vegan food was amazing! both the burgers and the chilli-sin-carne-fries! i am not a vegan and not even a vegetarian, but still i immensely enjoyed it. please invite them back next year!
