Unicode extension for home computer charsets approved

category: general [glöplog]

A Unicode extension proposal to include glyphs from teletext and home/legacy computer systems has been approved. The new codepoints include 3x2-cell graphics (as seen in teletext), and also semigraphic glyphs necessary to cover PETSCII.

Proposal: https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2019/19025-terminals-prop.pdf

I'm glad we're getting these codepoints, and personally am particularly looking forward to the 3x2 pseudo-graphics. Thoughts? :)

Cool! Finally something interesting for 12.0. It'll need font support as well.

Good :)
Surely makes more sense than emoji disaster.

Oh, this is nice! Perhaps the NFO viewer here could gain PETSCII support at some point? :)

It could, but then there's not a lot of PETSCII NFO files, are there?

Gargaj: I suppose not... But perhaps that's because the internet hasn't supported this yet? ;)

You're of course right, this isn't going to become a thing. Still cool to be able to convey the characters in Unicode, though.

Sweet, next step will be for them to end this Han-unification madness: https://modelviewculture.com/pieces/i-can-text-you-a-pile-of-poo-but-i-cant-write-my-name

Four UTF-8 as it's on the SMP.

There's a small problem for PETSCII. The 5th one eighth blocks (1FB70) are used for box drawing normally. These are offset by 1/16 block to the light box drawing characters (2500) so they don't fit together fully as the latter ones are in the middle. There are no crossings or corners with 5th one eight blocks of course.

It's fine for encoding PETSCII data but a font must alter the glyphs from the proposed ones so everything fits together. For example to display C64 PETSCII one eighth blocks need to be drawn with quarter width instead.

Unicode 13 was released a week ago. The interesting part is:
